It’s good for tomorrow, 70A shedplate and red nameplates just as it was in 1974. Quite an achievement for a 100% volunteer run single engine to be on the mainline for 50 years

Yes, it is extremely commendable. When was the last time red plates were carried? Incidentally, I'm mildly curious about the reporting number 1Z21 for tomorrow - is it a nod to the Bulleid early numbering protocol, or am I reading far too much into it!?

The nameplates only come out on special occasions, I can’t remember the last time it was used. Special non timetabled trains are Y or Z so nothing to do with Bulleid. If you read Trackside magazine you will see Nick Brodrick’s monthly mainline news is called One Zulu for that reason.

Yes, I meant the 21 part (as in 21C1), rather than the 1Z part. Other runs have sometimes used part of the loco number, or other relevant numbers, for their reporting numbers. This one may be random.

I thought it was just allocated at random but I will try and find out

Just mild curiosity - please don't spend time on it.

On 27th April 1974 at the head of ten coaches Clan Line hauled its first revenue earning journey with passengers on the main line under the ownership of the Merchant Navy Locomotive Preservation Society. The time was 10:10 as it steamed out of Basingstoke down the West of England main line towards Salisbury and Westbury.

Today and exactly 50 years to the minute from that date Clan Line is currently hauling the British Pullman near Milepost 31 - in itself a significant place on the SWML - and heading again towards Basingstoke. It's a route it has worked hundreds of times under BR and MNLPS ownership. Soon it will cover the same section of line that it did in 1974 en route to Bath.

You may only be a steam locomotive but you and your owners have a story to tell and a reputation of quality and professionalism in preservation that will forever keep you at the top of main line heritage steam operations. Happy Anniversary Clan Line! Enjoy your day. You are back where you belong.

Seen clattering through Brookwood, what a fine start to a Saturday morning!

lovely to see the faith in the loco to be out without a box on the back, well done ladies and gents you should be hugely proud of the work achieved to get 35028 back to doing what she does best

    all the best
    Matt :)

That timing to the minute at mp31 - was that planned or coincidence? If the latter - amazing. If the former - ditto!

It's so good to see Clan Line back in action. Well done to to the small team of dedicated volunteers who have achieved so much. Oh, and I also like the '50' on the reporting disc. [BJ]

Shenanigins at Woking with '28 staying on the UF and crossing at B&NH, and seemingly delaying the following local in the process. I was on my way to film at Woking but was thwarted by a missed train at Gfd after BTP action and a resultant GWR ECS blocking p8 there.
