Possibly because theses locos had a steel inner box fitted with stay spacing based on the original copper inner, the outer box wasn't replaced so the original stay pattern used, if the whole box, inner and outer , had been designed for a steel inner would the stay arrangement have been different? How different was the stay arrangement on the black five boilers designed for steel inner boxes Vs those with copper?

At a guess I would think that copper boxes would have closer pitched stays as copper is more ductile than steel, this 'May' lead to an all steel (outer and inner) being to rigid, thus movement could lead to faults, but that's just a guess since copper has a higher co-efficient of expansion than steel, which could suggest that the stays get more movement on a copper box, traction engines seem to manage with steel inner boxes and outer wrappers.

I have zero interest in Tornado as a loco I want to photo and /or travel behind. But I have been concerned enough about the impact on all those working on and /or funding it and/or wanting to enjoy the loco running again, to be rather unsettled by the story that has been unfolding here. Add to that my almost total lack of understanding of any mechanical object comprising two or more components (although some made of only one part can be a bit tricky at times), probably means my asking if a boiler steam test to full pressure needs to be carried out before the loco is transported to the GC, only serves to underline my general mechanical ignorance?

I think it will need a final steam test before being signed off by the boiler inspector which I assume has been done or will be done before it goes to the GCR. For any mainline runs a full boiler pressure test is carried out to test the safety valves are lifting at the right pressure as part of the FTR exam.

There is a relationship of many variables, how much the found ring moves, how much the crown moves, the thermal differential between the inside and outside of the box, and as you rightly point out, stay spacing.
Then you can throw in the various pressure points, too. Its quite a thing to model in FEA.

I noted the K1 boiler is nearing completion and noticed it has copper stays in that repair picture...

I would argue Traction engines boilers see far less abuse due to the steam raising requirements. Where a Loco may consume, what hundreds? of tonnes of water in a day, how much does a TE consume....?

The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust are pleased to report that Tornado has arrived at GCR, where it will shortly commence testing and running in.

At 1:18 in the first video* Huw Parker mentions that they have had "new tyres fitted to the driving wheels". Did we not hear a little while ago that they were going to turn the tyres down to clear the firebox cladding?

    * Edit: and at 2:15 in the second video.

Outrageously off-topic, but I see that the ex NCB "Austerity" shunting Tornado is fitted with a Geisl Ejector, anyone know of any other locos in service similarly fitted??

Now owned by the boss of LMS. Handy, being able to use your own loco to shunt your latest overhaul project!

I think I liked the 'Austerity' more in that video... at least it's back. Third time lucky for the NVR in August, perhaps?
