The earlier ones have a cover over the valve chests above the footplate. I'm afraid I don't have drawings to check exactly what the differences are.

One thought looking at those photos - all else being equal, on a tank engine you get a bit of extra water capacity by dropping the running plate and mounting the tanks lower. (Assuming the top of the tank remains in the same position relative to the rail). It's not a lot, but a fag packet calculation suggests perhaps another 50 - 100 gallons, which is probably worth having.

That suggestion doesn’t hold water with a tender loco though. :)
It’s an intriguing question to which we need an answer.

Lowers the centre of gravity even if no extra capacity results.

The big 2-8-0s were not blessed with excess water capacity, but it depends on whether the limit is weight or volume (volume being presumably limited by forward vision requirements).
Unless the Churchward diaries I like to mythologise about make their appearance I don't suppose we'll ever know what the thinking was.

They were designed for a particular job, hauling coal trains in the South Wales Valleys so was the water capacity adequate for it - or not?

Does anyone know if there has been any recent progress with the Catch Me Who Can project at SVR? Their own website has apparently not been updated since July 2021. Has the project stalled?

    Evening everyone,

Do any of you know what the current state of play is regarding 1014 at Didcot?. The website hasn't been updated since December.
    Thank you.

There's a Facebook post from February showing work on the rods. I gather they're at a stage where there are a myriad of unspectacular little tasks to get done.

I think that's what I love about the clan project website, the sheer enthusiasm they show on every part, be it a wheel casting or a door hinge

They’ve really managed to turn this project around recently. So many new build projects now making excellent progress. Shame the moribund No. 2007 isn’t one of them.

Despite Tornado's overhaul taking much longer than expected, that work possibly(?) delaying progress on the P2, and some convenanters losing faith, it does seem fairly certain that the P2 will be finished eventually. There is nothing wrong with the Trust planning what they wish to do when existing projects are complete. If the existing projects are delayed, the plans become longer-term. But it does seem possible that "longer-term" will become "never" when they have both the A1 and the P2 to operate and maintain.

Pity if they are - I'd have preferred a V3 to a V4 but I suspect the V4 is an attempt to get a foot in the door of the lucrative Jacobite market.

I just want to live long enough to get my promised first run behind the P2 when it's complete. I have no faith in any further projects.
