I was also a bit bemused by "future volunteers will be expected to be ‘multi-skilled". Sounds like they're not interested in increasing volunteer numbers, just piling more work on a smaller pool of volunteers. Can't see that ending well.

Yes, it's noticeable how these have been published at what looks like the last decent moment. If 2023 was a better year - and I hope it was - then I'd hope that the audited accounts would be made available rather sooner.

They were published and sent to the members in time for the AGM way back in the Autumn.

Excellent. My question is why the statutory requirements appear to have been left to the last possible moment.

Many other heritage railways recorded a similar percentage drop off in volunteer numbers after the pandemic as did other parts of the hospitality sector with a higher average reduction. Fortunately volunteer numbers are now showing a healthy and very welcome increase.

I think there’s been some sort of fallout from what’s happened with the group at Levisham? I wonder if that’s something to do with the current situation?

I’ve said before but I look at what happened at the railway myself and my family have a had an involvement with for quite a few years and it makes me wonder why lessons in various parts of the country don’t appear to have been learned.

It’s very simple to say this in a sentence on an internet forum but it’s really not a good idea to P!$$ off your staff paid or volunteers.
Why cant some people understand this?

You should read and inwardly digest the second part of Tom's message that I highlighted in bold.
No need to comment, please just think about it long and hard.

I'm not sure the timings fully work here - this is basically 2022's performance.
Indeed - but the CC was much later. I'd normally expect the two to be done simultaneously

I believe 2022 (the year that this applies to) saw a prolonged steam ban due to fire risk in the Moors, with diesels substituting.
2023 only saw a few weeks of steam ban as last year wasn't as hot or dry.

I recall at the time, the diesel fuel bill was to the tune of £8k a week during the prokonged diesel running.

Showing how these stories get a life of their own once out there, had an email from an old work colleague who only has a passing interest in railways, being into traction engines, asking me if I had seen the BBC story about the railways "difficulties".
As an old boss we both had used to say "it is never about the truth, it is all about the perception"

    HELP REQUIRED

By the spring of 1984 the pressure of a young family considerably curtailed my railway photography. Another aspect that also suffered was my record keeping of what I had actually taken and here is a case in point.

I recognise the location as Pickering, North Yorkshire Moors Railway and the date is spring 1984 and that is it. I have totally failed to identify the 0-6-0ST taking water, its only identification visible being a 26D (Bury) shed plate. I have eliminated 3180 (wrong chimney) and Antwerp (wrong colour) which were photographed working on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in 1984. The 26D shed plate suggests a visitor from the East Lancashire Railway maybe?

    Suggestions welcome.
