Sounds to me like an excellent idea but The Shadowy Chancellor aka Mrs W said it would break "fishscale rules" (I think that she meant fiscal) so it has had to be limited to Senior Railcard holders only. "Vote Wistle for more F in fun!"

It took several years but he now has us fully trained, we are days and his "home" is for nights with plentiful food on an as required basis at both locations. It helps that his two homes are only 40yds apart. Many years ago a stray adopted us and he stayed for the rest of his life. The cat decides!

The long stop in P12 Crewe also points to loco taking water.

It had been raining all morning in Wistleland, the two main forecasts for Leyland, around lunchtime varied, one said 95% chance of heavy rain the other 99% chance of light rain. It would have been sensible to head for the cover at Preston station, but Oswald had other ideas and Leyland was chosen. Despite me actively discouraging her, Mrs W offered to come along and hold the brolly - what a star! Traffic along the A666 was its usual nightmare, a quick twiddle around the back streets and we were soon on the M65.

As we approached Leyland the rain eased and finally stopped, fingers crossed. There were only two spaces left on the car park, both very narrow; the first was a "no chance" and the second an "only just". Mrs W with her sylph-like figure just managed to squeeze out of the passenger side door. I bought a ticket, collected the bits (and the brolly) from the boot and we went onto platform 1. Steam more frequently passes on the fast lines and it is less usual on the slow lines, let's hope the train keeps to the slow.

BIL left Preston 4E and made rapid progress. Looking north you could see the steam in the far, far distance. After what seemed like an age BIL drew nearer, exhaust billowing out as she passed under a bridge. A lovely whistle as she neared the station, from the briefest glimpse as she flashed by , it looked like Martyn Soames on the footplate. As the coaches passed by they had big, opening windows - remember those? And then it was gone and NO Diesel! 13C, 8E & 44mph. It remained dry but very dull and overcast.

On our way home the sky brightened and it remained dry all the way. Mrs W got ready to go out and check out her woodpeckers, before she had set a foot outside it began to rain and has done ever since. Following his lunch, Diego had gone out for a mooch around but returned shortly after the rain began, a very soggy moggy!

Rebuilt Bulleid Merchant Navy class 4-6-2 No. 35018 British India Line hurries through Hartford station on 4th June 2024, soon after restarting its journey from Carnforth to Southall on an ECS move that will ultimately end on the Swanage Railway.
