There is a private charter for LSL on Monday 3rd June from Crewe to York via Diggle, anybody know what this is please?, possibly a run by 60532 Blue Peter? or a diesel hauled charter?
looking at the return times for Gascoigne Wood Down Loop where it involves a reversal this could indicate it is a steam loco

    return via Hebden Bridge

Was there not a white rose down for this day originally and it disappeared after the issues at New mills? If I remember correctly it was originally scheduled for 60007.

It was, but it doesn't fit. Plus it's out on the 5th so two trips in 3 days is a bit tight.

Just to bump this thread back up, Live Rail Record has some of the reversals/stops listed as water stops:

OUT; Guide Bridge Up & Down (Loop?) and Milford Loop
    https://live.rail-record.co.uk/train.php/?c=U15086&d=2024-06-03

BACK; Horbury Up Goods Loop and Brewery Jn
    https://live.rail-record.co.uk/train.php/?c=U15089&d=2024-06-03

Maybe some mileage accumulation for ‘two things straight out the box’; both blue?

EDIT: Someone in the know posted a reply to a thread on WNXX – “34046 "Braunton" with a 47 at the other end.” Oh well, maybe next time!

It is often said that a criminal will return to the scene of his (or her) crime and so it was with Oswald. Only 7 weeks after my debacle at Diggle Jn (when I started the camera and then stopped it again a second later) I was back; given the opportunity of redemption by an LSL operated private charter. The journey was relatively uneventful apart from avoiding the high speed HGV's that populated most of the lanes of the M60 and M62 on a Monday morning. On my last visit to Diggle Jn my satnav sent me down some "roads" that were so narrow they were barely passable. This time I set my destination a couple of miles away (on a main road) and only then did I select my final destination that now had only one route to it, it worked a treat - Oswald one, Satnav Lady nil!

I arrived about 50 mins before the train was due to find there was no-one on the bridge. After parking I decided to take a short walk up the footpath that leads over the portal of Standedge Tunnel. When I got back a solitary photographer had appeared, worryingly RTT showed no times beyond Ashbury's E Jn. Despite this I gathered my bits from the car and got ready. Another photographer appeared and we chatted as we waited. "Something special?" or "What time's it due?" asked several people as they passed both in cars and on foot. A few stayed, most didn't want to wait. Finally RTT showed some progress, the train had now left Stalybridge 3E (and could probably gain time on the climb). The booked time at Diggle Jn was 11.53.

I heard a very distant whistle, time to start the cameras and check that they are recording (and check again, and again). Another whistle still some way off, a dog waiting with its owner let out a single bark (the lady in charge later told me that she had accidently stood on the dog's paw). Another lady and a teenage boy arrived and began chatting excitedly, I politely explained that I was recording sound and they apologised and were silent - very kind, thank you. Then another whistle, this time haunting and echoing. A piece of heavy plant working near the line began to reverse, its audible warning croaking away. Then smoke as Braunton appeared and headed in our direction, plenty of exhaust, working hard up the 1/125r - this is what it's all about! Clicking from the rail joint near the points, under the bridge, smoke hanging in the air, D1935 on the rear (I won't comment, no doubt others may feel compelled to do so).

Finally Braunton charged towards the tunnel, exhaust trailing in her wake, a whistle as she entered, smoke billowing out. The carriages disappeared one by one then as the 47 entered the tunnel out popped a service train - that was just about as close as it gets without being a disaster (Lucky Oswald). 16C, 6E & 50mph. (Note for Shep: WD40 not required.)

I decided to return via the M66 and then Grane Road from Haslingden, a very bad decision. Contractors were applying a tar and stone chipping dressing to the surface of the Grane Road; a 60 min journey became 80, ah well, you can't win 'em all! Ham sandwich for lunch, I had the sandwich and Diego had more than his fair share of the ham, just as he had done with Mrs W's sandwich and Oswald Jnr's - little wonder that he's a tubby tabby.

The old Daresbury station in Moore village, far more overgrown than the last shot I took here more years ago than I care to contemplate; given the amount of housebuilding around here I wonder if an argument could be made for a reopening.
And Mosley on the climb to Diggle, doubtless this will be very different when the wires reach here. Will this be the last steam before that ?

That would have been nice to be on. Sensible load including the diesel and an unusual route. Probably with no assistance as well. So LSL can do it when it suits them.

Well we have no idea of how many were on it, but I guess turning a profit may not have been the prime motivator depending on who the charter was.
There were only two coaches removed as far as I could see from the usual rake.

What a bizarre remark. Hopefully you should have registered - but clearly didn't - that I was pleased to see that the load had been dropped back to something that the loco could handle without help. That's why it would have been nice to be on it.

There is absolutely no point in trying to understand how people can misinterpret comments. :)

34046 eases its private charter around the curve from Gascoigne Wood Junction to Milford Junction. How long is it since a steam loco last ran over this freight-only line?

Whoops! My excuse for not knowing is that I was on the Kyle line that day....

At the risk of embarrassing myself further, any offers for the time before that?
