Swanage Railway and WCR have had an excellent relationship for many years.

2 x years of Wareham services
Many years of Diesel Gala transit moves
Many years of steam loco transit moves

The times from Southampton suggest normal line speed but 35018 will be restricted to 45 mph. It could have a DL on the front from Southall which would run round at Soton.

All aircons as far as I can tell.

Possibly for a second train? But possibly just to bring the others back for maintenance

I agree, personally i always think Clan Line is to bulled up. Can't remember them looking like that in my spotting days at Clapham Jct or Waterloo.

Whereas I prefer to see them spick and span, not as they mostly (with occasional exceptions) looked when steam was neglected, both because it was on the way out and for shortage of cleaners.

I didn't mean looking really run down, like at the end without nameplates etc. Just everyday grime that showed they were proper working engines, and not museum exhibits. Even when the railway had plenty of cleaners, they didn't look like Clan Line or Clun Castle (2 examples). My dad was a fireman at Wellingborough, and he used to say the only time you saw a really clean loco was when they were ex works!

My memories are of the 73A and 70A locos in the fifties and sixties. In the fifties, Stewarts Lane seemed to have two classes. The showpieces always gleaming were 70004/14, whichever MNs they had, 34091/2 and 30768. After that, the general purpose engines for going to Ramsgate etc (including 34066-70) could look anything from clean to workstained. The Nine Elms Pacifics and 4-6-0s were much more uniform, clean condition. This is all before 1966/67 when the former glories like 35008 were in deplorable external condition a lot of the time. The Gateshead streaks were of course legendary.

I think Clan Line is kept in that super-shine condition because that is what the rather prestigous company who use it from time to time to haul their Pullman train wants.

Looking at Real Time Trains for Tuesday, I notice that '55 013' is leaving the NVR but also, something is arriving from Kidderminster: does anyone know what that is?

It's running as a light engine so I assume it's a diesel - I think I heard someone suggest a 20 whilst I was waiting for the Deltic to run round at Yarwell?

According to a comment on a DPS Facebook post, 20189+20142 will be collecting '55013' and dragging it to Barrow Hill

Thanks for that. Sadly I'm working so no photo opportunities.

I'd prefer to be listening to the engine as I travel, not some bloke holding court
