I should add to my last posting:
    'In Recycling News;
The studs holding the sump under the tank floor are unused cylinder head studs for a Sulzer 8LDA28. Apparently there was a later version for use in the Cromptons, so we were passed the old version. 20-30years later we've found a use for some of them!'
Some people call it hoarding, some call it collecting junk, but we know better!
    Pat
PS I know that the Sulzer engines were built under licence in GB - I didn't realise that they used BSW threads.

So here I am once more in the playground of the broken trucks........

There was no working party atop the hill last week, so hostilities with the troublesome trucks resumed yesterday........ and as it was a bank holiday, numbers were low with three main attendees and a couple of part timers, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.......

Main focus therefore was what needed to be done within the skills base.......

So, one lad, plus the morning attendee spent the day progressing things with steel Highfit B481682, which involve flattening back the paint work on the north side door, followed by sections of the solebar, and then getting the whole lot into red oxide.

That left Muggin's 'Ere and his stand in mucker, plus matey in the afternoon, to finish off final fitting the external cladding planks on the south side, London end of LMS van M517317......... a job that proved to be a ball ache, but by the end of the day, they were bolted into place!

Didn't bother picking up the camera yesterday, so nere's a few more pics from the recent gala........

More progress on the steel Highfit.

The south side external cladding planks finally fitted, the fillet is going to take some fettling.

As a matter of interest how many steam locos at the Mid Hants are available for use? The website reports 506 , 41312 and Kilmersdon. If this correct is anything else being returned to service for the summer?

Just to show you how good a Bulleid sounds on the Mid Hants metals. The MHR film crew have produced a footplate video from 34070 footplate.

I must admit, changing head code discs and picking up an additional carriage en route without stopping shows impressive skill! ;)

(Apologies - I enjoyed that really. I always like seeing footplate videos to see how other people work).

Great stuff! Brings back happy memories of having a footplate ride on 34007 "Wadebridge" some years ago.

Also clever editing, keeping the sound track seeming continuous despite including clips from multiple cameras on at least two separate runs.
Edit: At least three runs, as there are three different head codes.
    Edit: Four!

That is just something else. A brilliant video.

I had almost forgotten what an un-rebuilt should sound like having become accustomed to poor 'old smokey' up at Carnforth and its various journeys over Shap and the S&C. Obviously, 4 or 5 up the three miles of 1 in 60 to Medstead is not the same as the four miles of 1 in 75 up Shap with 12 on but it's simply a case of "if it sounds right, it is right!"

It is superb. Adds back a soundtrack to a run I had behind unrebuilt 34019 'Bideford' over the Alps in 1966 during a diversion for the electrification works. A 10 coach train and re-starting from a stop at Alton a max of 33 mph on the easier bit, then around 13 mph over the top before Medstead. Not an easy minimum to time at that slow speed anyway, and as it was maybe combined with a slowing for a single line token exchange - or some other reason to reduce speed through Medstead. Around 65 mph down the other side!

There would have been a token exchange at Medstead then - the box didn't close until '67.

One of my few Alps runs was with Merchant 28 actually with 9 on. A rolling start through Alton at 18 then 35 up the hill dropping off to a minimum of 24. Pretty straightforward really.

Yes that’s what Dave Parsons said to me after leaving Basingstoke on 34006 Bude. He found what he thought was a good position on the reverser and left it there (about 20 %) until we got checked at 95 mph near Fleet. One of my best ever footplate rides. Don
