    On the Mid-Hants thread
I am intrigued by two things noticeable from the footplate video. Most of the shovelfulls of coal seem to be going just inside the firebox rather than being thrown further. Does the grate slope enough for the coal to rattle further forward or what?
Edit: Second question about the regulator deleted.

Yes the grate is sloped down back to front, generally the draft caused by the chimney (and some component from gravity) will encourage the fire towards the front of the firebox. One of the old boys at Swanage would describe it as "she will take what she needs" whilst the regulator is open.

Something of curiosity for a little while, increased by my visit to Strictly Bullied 2, is there a particular reason for the higher placement of 35006's shedplate?

Looking at my copy of Tim Hillier-Graves book, The Modified Bullied Pacifics, there's a few pictures of the 35006 with the higher placed shedplate in both Air Smoothed and Rebuilt conditions, as well as some in rebuilt condition without the shedplate, along with some pictures of others with it mounted higher.

I think it has been mentioned somewhere, but I can't find it. I'm looking to see where 34070 is due to be working next, and if it will still be in the current wonderful 1960s weathered condition.

    Thanks in advance.

    Sir Archibald Sinclair

Sir Archie will be on the Bluebell Railway “A” service this weekend, 15/16 June.

(On the Saturday, the first A departure will be Camelot to allow the re-dedication ceremony to take place, with Sir Archie taking the second and third trains. On Sunday it runs all the A service).

Manston will stay at Swanage with Eddystone.

257 Squadron will move to the Mid Norfolk Railway for a couple of weeks, and then to the Mid Hants for the rest of 2024.

Sir Keith Park will move to the Spa Valley, and will be renamed 303 Squadron (for one year) on 1st September .

Filing this under ‘things I didn’t expect to drive past on the way to Burgess Hill’… Looks a bit Bulleidy to me - anybody know what it is?

It's the boiler from 35025 Brocklebank Line, I think it was mentioned on a local Facebook page with the same info Tom has posted. This weekend is the High Weald Steam Weekend in Nutley, but not sure if 35025's boiler will be on display there this weekend or if it's just part of this demonstration today.

I passed 92 Squadron's tender on the A1 last night; no sign of the locomotive though.

Just had another look and it appears that 35025's boiler will be on display at the event this weekend.

Several recent videos have shown Tangmere's exhaust sounding very uneven. I'm aware of criticisms of the steam reverser on an unrebuilt Bulleid, but wouldn't that result in the wrong cutoff on all three cylinders rather than the very uneven valve events that we can hear? What could be wrong? How much does it matter for pulling trains? How hard should it be for WCRC to put right?

As a non-engineer I can't add much to the above except to agree with the sentiments. It's definitely true that the setting as shown on the steam reverser has always been seen as, shall we say, indicative! In practice, an experienced Southern driver would listen to the locomotive and drive according to what the exhaust was telling him about where the cut off really was. In more recent times I recall that Ray Churchill always seemed to know how to drive it and set it up properly.

I would have thought that an uneven exhaust beat was a result of valve timings being off rather than cutoff position, which would be more noticeable in the change in tone of the exhaust beat
