Quote: 'Are you looking for a unique and quirky place to stay in Wales? Why not try a vintage train holiday. The Toad is an incredibly well restored GWR brake van vintage train otherwise known as a Toad Wagon, hence the name, commonly used post wartime as a safety brake on goods trains. Boasting original rustic features and weighing a hefty 20 tons, today offering unique self catering accommodation with en-suite shower and wood fired hot tub! Why not immerse yourself amongst sounds of bird song and country life. Come wind, rain or shine escape to this fantastic base and explore the Brecon Beacons and beyond all year round.'.
    Oh dear.

Well it looks to have been well restored for its new use, I'm impressed that they fitted so much into the space!

Remind me - "Toad" is the telegraphic name for a brake van from any company, no? Because I'm sure some LNER brakes were classed as Toads.

I think originally it referred to the classic GWR single-balcony brake van we all know of, but perhaps BR adopted the telegraphic code more generally?

The term TOAD is certainly not mentioned in the BR Telex / Teleprinter / TOPS guide to codewords I have issued in the late 1970's.
TOAD was a GWR code word for a wagon type, just like GANE for bogie bolster or SIPHON for a ventilated milk van.

    Cheers, Neil

Not sure when it was dropped by BR, but it was certainly in use in 1958.

Spotted an international looking carriage heading north on the A9 passing Gleaneagles services at 12:40. Blue and cream livery. One of the movie carriages?

Thanks. I did see that number on the side when I passed it parked up where the big loads park up just before the Broxden Roundabout but couldn't remember what order so couldnt spot it immediately on RHRP.

BR Tube chassis 732930 has been permanently transferred and moved to Ferryhill Trust at Aberdeen. It departed the North Norfolk on Wednesday. The chassis had previously been used to accommodate our 5-comp Great Northern coach body in the vintage train, but the chassis became surplus after a more historically accurate 6-wheel example was restored for the coach.[IMG]

A fine coach (and the only Barry coach presently on wheels?). May I ask what the plans for it are?

The Barry Carriage Trust plan to continue restoration both offsite (parts) and at the Gwili and then 163 will be matched up with GWR 216 and Taff Vale 220 which are already based at the GR.
