    Unfortunately that post was incorrect. In the 1970s the loco was moved from its plinth at the Tongaat head offices to a new site, as "gate guardian" for a new industrial estate being developed on Tongaat land. This site was called Prospecton so CW was given Prospecton nameplates, which she carried until she reached England. Prospecton is a large industrial area near to Durban, KZN. Also the WB works number is 2819, not 2891.

    I see the Teifi Valley Railway now has sister loco Sinembe.
    The L and B thread occasionally mentions Sir George Newnes.
    Any further update on getting the loco back in service?

    Tee photo on the Beamish website referred to above shows that no stays are needed between the inner and outer fireboxes but the backplate being flat requires staying above the level of the inner box. Clearly the marine design was successful or Bagnall would not have persevered with it and obtained repeat orders from Tongaat and elsewhere. One advantage is that the firebox and ashpan do not drop down to axle level like a conventional box which makes the running gear much easier to design: it would be difficult if not impossible to use a conventional box on Monarch as it would interfere with the bogie pivots and similarly on these 4-4-0 tanks there is no room between the two axles. However there are disadvantages; as previous entries have said, firebox volume and perhaps more importantly, ashpan volume are limited and as far as I can see there is no space for a brick arch

    I was having a look inside the firebox of Bagnall replica 'Brown Bear' a couple of days ago and whilst not truly a "brick arch" there is a low firebrick 'wall' across the front of the grate a short distance from the tubeplate. This slopes back at an angle which mimics the action of a brick arch in lengthening the flame path but also prevents the fire being drawn into the lower row of tubes. I don't know if this was standard Bagnall practice but certainly isn't unique to Brown Bear.
