When making enquiries about Bauxite some years ago I was told that its unique look is more the result of years of inappropriate cleaning (pre-NRM) than the honest patina of a hard working life.

Not in ex-Barry condition though, it's displayed as if it's being worked on and dissambled, not with faded paint and rust

    May i surgest 4771 :-#

I know she has only just run out of her ticket, however i think she is a prime example of what a NRM steamer should be; Reliable, Good working condition, Good looking loco and able to roam all over the country!

On another note does anyone know if anywhere has taken up on the NRM's offer, mentioned in Steam Railway a few issues back about, If they can provine a space, the NRM will provide a loco!?

    thanks

Oh, the 'Spinner' -PLEASE [-o< I saw it at Rainhill in 1980 - fabulous.

That and the Midland Compound together out on the main line would be marvellous =P~

As for the livery - what's not to like? <dons tin hat and legs it>

  7. yes in proper liverys both would be superb but the compound is a must seems a forgotten tresure in the nrm

I saw the Spinner at Rainhill too - one of the reasons why I'd do it again.

I wouldn't say the Compound is a forgotten treasure Jud, Mrs Ashby & I were looking at it at Highley on Tuesday and it's very prominent and wowing the visitors to the Engine House on the SVR where the folks love it. Good outreach.

I believe that the NRM has turned down a funded offer to return 4003 Lode Star to traffic on the grounds that it represents Swindon practice in the 1950's.

Any loco pre 1910 is fine with me, sometimes in preservation you'd be forgiven for thinking railway didn't exist pre 1910.

    Or pre-1948 :-#

But yes, anything pre-1910 would be great. The North Eastern Railway 4-4-0 1621 would be superb

in fairness to the NRM, a quick look at what locos in the national collection might show that someone there agrees with you. out at the moment there is:

    the beatie well tank (1874)
Taff tank 62 (1897, not in steam yet but being worked on)
T9 120 (1899, admitedly not in steam but being looked in to)
    city of Truro (1903)
    Robinson O4 (1911)
    Super D (1921, but still pre-grouping)

    They are against:
    Sir Lamiel (1925)
    Lord Nelson (1926)
    Oliver Cromwell (1951)
I haven't included DofH as although it's been worked on its no closer to steaming, or eustace forth as it's not mainline (nothing wrong with that of course).

So the NRM has twice as many pre grouping engines out than post grouping. Not many preserved lines can boast that.

Not a dig at the NRM or anyone but the likes of Hardwicke or the Midland Compound would be a nice change from the endless procession of Black Fives and Bulleids that most of Preservation seems to have, i'd hope an engine of similar age is looked at when Truro's ticket is up.

Fact is the NRM is the only real concentration of pre grouping engines whereas loco dating from the 20's onwards can be found on pretty much every Heritage line.

Maybe we should change the title of this thread to 'Are there any engines the NRM should restore?'

Personally - I'd love to see the large GN Atlantic let loose on the ECML :)

If you're including "being worked on", there's also:

    Flying Scotsman (1923) and
    4F 4027 (1924)

I thought there was a problem with the gap between the flanges on 251 and 990 preventing them from going mainline? Still, it'd be nice to see 251 steam again, assuming it's given its superheaters back so the loco may actually boil water this time round!

I've been lucky enough to travel behind 'Henry Oakley', 'Hardwicke' and the Stirling Single in preservation but it would be nice to see them running again. Never managed a trip behind the Midland Compound so that will also get my vote. I saw the Midland Spinner at Rainhill but afterwards did it ever pull a train? That's another one I'd like to experience.

Well, not counting that slight concentration of 12 and two halves pre-grouping engines on the Bluebell Railway, plus another two 19th century industrials... \:D/

(Two halves = The Dukedog! - only the GWR could build an engine in 1936 and make it look antique...)

But returning to seriousness, I'd basically agree with your premise. My fantasy restoration in the NRM would be the the Adams T3; or failing that, the Wainwright D, especially if they'd send it to the Bluebell to run with the C, P and H which should all be in ticket within a year or two. If the boiler's steaming capacity is anything like the O1 or the C, it would be a gem!

Why the clamour to get 100+ years old locos back on the main line ? . Surely there are enough preserved lines to keep them busy & without the need to fit air brakes , T.P.W.S. & headlight.
For instance the Ivatt Atlantics would be more at home pulling a rake of Gresley teaks on the N.Y.M.R. or S.V.R. than a rake of mark ones on the main line.

    Bob.
