It was quite a common type of flooring in factories in Italy and I worked in lots of plants where it was placed under machines. Over time it absorbed excess oil until it was saturated after which it became very slippery. After numerous falls the floor had to be replaced. It did make exceptional firewood, if a little smokey ;-)

They used these type of blocks in the Harland & Wolff shipyard, specifically in the engine workshops and test area. They were very good at absorbing vibration as well as excess oil.

Thank you. Certainly end-grain but I would be surprised if the vertical depth is more than a few cm.

Somewhere I found a photo (and I can't for the life of me find it again) of a wooden block pavement in a railway town that had been made by recycling the teak blocks from Mansell wooden carriage wheels - evidently at a time when thousands of such wheels were being withdrawn from traffic.

The fitting shop floor at Steamport (Southport 27C) was made of the wooden centres from Mansell wheels.

Great to see the Hulleras de Sabero locomotive and coach in the museum alongside Dick Kerr no. 18, all on display from the Rampton Collection for the first time

And as I circle back post vacation and sort pictures and write up thoughts, I see that some of the exhibits I wrote about have already changed. I think this is a good thing though for keeping it fresh and having new things go on display.

That said, my initial feelings from a couple of weeks ago of being very impressed by the museum buiding remain as I have written up my thoughts in more detail, and I am glad as it is well worth the trip to Aberysthwyth to see it.

Nice blog and happy to see you enjoyed it. It's now on my list for the next time I am back in Wales. Though I am sure my trips cost a lot less!

They have both been in the back of the carriage shed there for some time now so i imagine quite a few people have seen them. I guess it depends if "seen publicly" means a photo of it on social media.

Had a very enjoyable last couple of days at WLLR(822) and VOR (7,60).
Friendly and helpful staff/volunteers at both and none of the book fixed trains nonsense I suffered further North last week .
VOR museum lived up to the expectation with several different and interesting exhibits .
Thanks ..I’ll be back for more next year .

the cafe has always seemed very busy and in my experience good food , drink and a friendly welcome . On a wet day with an hour to kick your heels before the train returns it was a welcome haven . its closure to seems counter to what I take from many railways that provision of food and drink is customer priority and a financial contributor as well . I know at least one line that would be more profitable if they only opened the cafe and didn't run trains !
