I was on a Jet2 flight from Cyprus to Birmingham once and the incoming flight had the crew that would work the return flight on board as passengers. Then they swapped over at Cyprus. The crew that had worked it from Birmingham stayed on board as passengers for the flight back to Birmingham, while the new crew, who had flown over as passengers, took over for the return.

Yes, if you choose to spend your off-duty time doing that you can do, but when things go wrong on your next shift owing to fatigue, you will be accountable. What you do (or anyone else) in your spare time is your affair, as long as you present yourself fit for work afterwards. Any sensible person would, of course, take rest/sleep, etc., but no-one can force you to.

Please don't take debate down a rabbit hole. Your insistence at continuing a debatable debate is not helpful.

Many thanks for that Al. I know it will mean more work for you, but if it continues, maybe think about moving it to elsewhere on Nat Pres? I'd much rather come here for a quick visit to keep up to date with info on RTC day trips.

But you yourself seem so good at taking debates down holes about the diesel on the back, or Tangmere not sound right. One rule for one?

With some of the VERY early starts necessary on some railtours, half of our support crew will stay in bed on the coach leaving other members to do the prep and early part of the trip. The rested staff will get up later on then take over allowing the ones that were up early to step back. So easily sorted complying with fatigue indexes etc, so long as you have enough people to cover both parts of the day.

You are missing the point completely, maybe deliberately. I really would like to understand your motive in talking publicly about what support crews do and do not do when working with steam locomotives together with the hours they may be on duty.

And the fact that @Oswald T Wistle and @Shep Woolley have decided to 'like' your post (implying that they think it's a good idea) tells you that lovely people they may be, but they also have not thought through the potential minefield they are happy to see discussed.

The diesel and Tangmere 'rabbit holes' you are trying to compare your support crew intrusion with is entirely different territory. Those are pretty obvious matters that videos expose day in, day out. I would suggest that the operational rules governing what loco support crews do are for those that do this work alone and not for random discussions on the internet.

My reason for liking 2857 harry’s post had nothing to do with support crews and their routines but because of your continual criticism of David Smith and his operations of DOTB and Tangmere’s valve timing. After you removed my last post about you which I find unacceptable I assume this post will go the same way.

Of all people I thought you knew that personal comments (sometimes wrapped up in advice) are not acceptable and everyone should be protected from folk who do that.

Sorry to have misread the meaning of your 'like' of #513. Obviously there is a lot of wire crossing going on here apart from the activities of @Scrat that do need unpicking by someone. I'll leave others to do that. Enough to say that in my view no good will come of it.

As for matters to do with the RTC, that is what this thread is about and who is not having an easy time at present, I have travelled under the new regime that was excellent because of what was possible on the day. I intend to do the same in a month with a similar hope so I am supportive when possible to be so.

Agreed not a total deal-breaker, RTC has been an OK operator.

But really, it would not require very much time for somebody to proof-read their website descriptions and check that this sort of thing has been corrected? It would further enhance their reputation.

Thank you for your kind comment, I've always strived to be a "lovely person" or perhaps more realistically someone who strives to be well mannered and make others smile (if and where possible).

I don't disagree with you about working hours; somethings are best left unsaid on a public forum and certainly in this thread. I also agree that diesel and Tangmere issues are in a different category.

I never thought that I would have to explain a "like", but here goes, the bit that I "liked" was the reference to diesels and Tangmere issues per se. As they are "pretty obvious matters that videos expose day in, day out", is it really necessary for repeated posts about, "Tangmere not sounding right", "the diesel pushing", "steam loco underpowered/too many carriages."? We have to accept that it's going to keep happening until something changes with ORR/WCRC. As with Harry & Shep put me down as a protest vote.

I thought the whole point of the NP forum is about expressing opinions whether folk agree or not . Obviously rules apply about not being abusive or nasty which doesn’t happen much but surely removing a post has to be a moderator collaboration not just because one doesn’t like or agree with it as the whole point/credibility of the forum goes out of the window. Only my opinion mind .

Looking back it was not Harry who brought up the working hours subject it was Scrat, whom I wonder has he an axe to grind?

Does anyone know if the RTC trip from Paddington to Minehead is running on Saturday 10th please?
And which Loco will be used? Many thanks.

No axe to grind at all! It was others who rather carelessly started the conversation about length of day of support crew in post 488, I initially suggested that more care should be exercised when making blunt statements about this issue!
