You weren't kidding when you said "a short distance". No disrespect intended, of course. I realise these things have to be done cautiously and incrementally.

It's an unfortunate setback, but after all the work that's gone into it, I'm sure it will eventually get there. It's a credit to the restoring group that they've got the machine this far considering it hasn't been powered up since 2001.

    Great news.

(I wonder if that will have to go out with a 47 on the back ‘just in case’?)

Excellent News, and a very useful addition to LSL's fleet.

Quite the train set is being collected at Crewe!!!!

I am *so* looking forward to seeing 89 001 return to traffic. I remember being mightily impressed by it when it was on trial on the ECML (and as I was commuting back then, so I had a few runs behind it) and far preferred it to the GEC option that was settled upon in the end.

A few thoughts watching that video (which cheered me up no end):

    - does that 37 still have its original engine?
    - what's the fate of all those 60s at the Brush works?
    - aren't Dellner couplings ugly?

I have to say it's a huge tribute to English Electric that they created a locomotive that is still a "go-to" for railway companies over sixty years after they appeared.

Quick answer to your points Mike but 37521 has an original EE 12CSVT power unit but was refurbished in the 1980’s with a Brush Alternator as part of the first life extension program, I believe the 5’s and the 7’s had re geared CP7 bogies too, the 7’s also had additional ballast weights added.

    God knows about the tugs.

And yes Dellner couplings are ugly, but what do you expect when you sell off your railway system and its engineering departments to other countries so everything has a Different coupling system compared to when you had a central department at Derby?

An aside - Derby were quite capable of coming up with different and incompatible coupling systems. And BR of insisting on reverting to old ones rather than standardising - note the 455s reverting to SR EPB rather than the Tightlocks of the 508s.
