One can but assume Tangmere will be visiting the wheel lathe in the next few days

Another day at the office for WCRC then? Seriously though, that's something that just shouldn't happen. Someone should be talked to about that.

I don’t think it’s fair to say that these unfortunate events happen to just WCRC. We are only a few months on from North Norfolk dragging the bucket round with the steam brake on. It’s a mistake which can be made, unfortunate as it may be, but it’s not fair to say it’s standard/“a day in the office” for WCR.

Yet she seems to have successfully worked the return trip. One has to ask just how much damage was done in that case.

I could name a railway that did the same to its Class 14 but won’t.

I could probably name the same on if we are thinking along the same lines!

It was a joke as the next line made clear.
And one hopes there was little. I guess it illustrates how complicated top and tail arrangements can be and why these operations are not entered into without good reason.

There was more than a pronounced set of 'thumps' from the wheel flats as she passed by. She should not, in my opinion, have worked the return working, but be examined and if deemed safe be worked slowly LE back to 10A.
Why did the crew not notice anything was amiss from the cab?. Instead of a rolling motion, there must surely have been a different 'feel', let alone sound through the wheels.

I chose not to say any of the above in case it came across to a few as me 'having a go' at WCRC. No doubt there was an inspection of the loco during the servicing layover and the decision was made that it could continue home.

There would have been an inspection, BUT if the crew were unaware that the brakes had been left applied, any flat spots might not have been noticeable.

So you think I have an unfounded agenda running? Well it's lucky then that I don't and I haven't decided to really get started! :)

Interesting and like you; I’d be concerned about the out of round wheels possible damaging the rail head: presumably it was reported to Network Rail at the time? These things can/do happen with top and tail working; I recollect the event happening on a preserved railway where I worked some 20 years ago; the driver responsible never worked a train again on the railway; after causing thousands of pounds worth of damage to the loco wheel-sets; following my investigation and report to HMRI. That incident meant the loco had to go onto the wheel lathe; taking life off the wheels as they had to be turned up again.

Certainly no sounds at Crosby Garrett in my video that sounds like wheel flats which would’ve been pretty audible from what folk are saying ?
