Of note regarding today's Fellsman, I noticed a post on Facebook about a group of mourners at Low Baron Wood overbridge (Armathwaite curve) for the return working. They were there in memory of Bridget Boissier who passed away on the 18th August. According to the post, she was granddaughter of Sir Nigel Gresley and lived at Low Baron Wood.

I live locally and have been visiting Armathwaite curve regularly over the past twenty five years and was never aware of this. Occasionally while I awaited the days steam, an old lady would drive down to the farm and would ask "what's coming?". I imagine it was Bridget. An incredible revelation.

    Here's a link to the Facebook post;

Just a couple of phone pics taken whilst 60007 was waiting for the green at the north end of platform 2 at Preston before heading off to Blackpool.

    IMG_1635.JPEG

8.10 pm with the platform canopy lights reflecting in paintwork still gleaming even after 300+miles of hard work, rain and smoke filled tunnels

    IMG_1636.JPEG

    Looks powerful even when stopped

Finally, the afternoon "Snack Box", the name of the producer perhaps reflecting the ambition of LSL's owner rather than a mere coincidence

A view of A4 'Streak' locomotive 60007 near Weeton with 'The Fellsman' of 28 August 2024, from Blackpool North to Carlisle.
The image includes the following elements (working from the furthest away to the nearest).
1.The Big One Ride at Blackpool Pleasure Beach opened in 1994 and at the time the tallest, steepest and fastest steel rollercoaster in the world
    2.Little Marton Windmill-completed in 1838 and operational until 1928
3.A4 locomotive 60007 'Sir Nigel Gresley' completed in 1937
4.British Rail Mark 1 carriages built between 1951 and 1974

With a couple of hours free I took a look at the GPS data for 3 of the climbs on Wednesday's Fellsman.

    The Settle & Carlisle Fellsman (28 Aug 2024) 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley + 12 + D1935

60007, with no help from the diesel, hauled a very heavy train up some challenging climbs. From GPS data the edhp, the “pull” at wheels and the pull at the drawbar have been calculated. These are average values sustained for the duration of the climb and not “spot figures calculated from the speed at the summit of a climb” (often misleading).

    Settle Jn to MP245

EDHP = 1475 at an average speed of 35.5mph was sustained for 17m 44s
Pull at wheels 6.97 tons, drawbar pull 5.45 tons

(MP245 is between Selside and the B6479 overbridge and is before the loco was eased for the speed restriction at Ribblehead).

MP275 to MP259.75 (Aisgill Summit Board)

EDHP = 1425 at an average speed of 36.7mph was sustained for 24m 57s
Pull at wheels 6.51 tons, drawbar pull 5.13 tons

    Whalley (MP17.75) to Ramsgreave & Wilpshire (MP13.25)

EDHP = 1175 at an average speed of 19.0 mph was sustained for 14m 13s
Pull at wheels 10.36 tons, drawbar pull 8.30 tons

Diego returned from holiday on Monday and is slowly settling down into his old routine, eat-sleep-repeat.

I've attached a couple of further shots of the above which may be of some interest, as follows:

    (1)
With smoke still drifting out of Blea Moor tunnel and Dent Head viaduct in the background, 60007 'Sir Nigel Gresley' passes through Dent.

    (2)
With the light fading fast, the power of A4 Pacific 60007 'Sir Nigel Gresley' is evident, as she streaks through the twilight at Salwick with the return working.
