It's not the first and won't be the last that something unexpected happens mid service period. It is an old piece of machinery and these things happen. Not also the 1st that have decided to go for a new 10 year boiler ticket after a major happenning either. What did seem impressive was once back at base how quick it was finished with faultless proving runs and back into service. Others which seem to be taking a while get a lot of criticism but no one seems to notice when there is a textbook finish to in service.

As a matter of interest, before this round of repairs, how much of the firebox remained from BR days or was any part of it ever replaced since the loco was preserved?

I don’t know is the short answer but I could try and find out. The current boiler, no 1121, is its fourth last on 35002 I think. Like all locomotives parts got swapped at heavy general overhauls, the last ten had fabricated rear trucks but 28 has one of the earlier cast ones, probably changed over at a general overhaul in early 1964 as there are pictures of it with the original truck in 1961

    News from the MNLPS. <BJ>

''The R.L.S.B Orient Express: 30 Years Ago Today.

Today marks a very special milestone for us. 30 years ago, on September 24th, 1994, we ran our very first VSOE 'Orient Express' tour, in association with the Royal London Society For The Blind (now know as the RSBC).
This memorable journey took invited special guests from London Victoria to Portsmouth & Southsea and back, also marking the first time we operated with air-braked stock, allowing us to run the magnificent Pullman coaches for the first time in preservation.
It was an incredibly proud day for everyone involved, and 30 years later, we are still just as proud and grateful for our strong partnership and friendship with Belmond.
The MNLPS would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Belmond for your incredible support and collaboration over the years.
Here’s to many more wonderful memories and journeys together! Photo kindly supplied by Alan French''.

It would be a shame for anyone to miss this John. For those who prefer not to use Facebook ....

Clan Line - The Golden Arrow engine

''The operation of 35028 Clan Line' on the mainline is a true testament to the incredible dedication and hard work of the volunteers and support crew at the MNLPS. Without their unwavering commitment, expertise, and countless hours of dedicated effort and hard work, this magnificent engine would not be able to run on the mainline.
The volunteers are the backbone of the preservation and maintenance of Clan Line, working tirelessly to maintain, service, and ensure the locomotive stays in immaculate working order. The work they carry out is vital to keeping Clan Line and the MNLPS alive. Our volunteers come from all walks of life, each bringing their unique talents to the team, with many learning and developing new skills along the way.
By supporting the MNLPS, whether through volunteering, donations, or becoming a member, you can be part of the effort to keep Clan Line running for years to come. To find out more and how you can get involved, visit www.clan-line.org.uk/
Here's a handful of photos from our last tour of 2024 with some of those volunteers who made everything possible last Saturday''.

I assume they couldn't find someone to hand make pizza's on the footplate. Would make a modern alternative to shovel cooked breakfast.

Thanks, I couldn’t find a way of copying it as you have done. This is only a personal observation on what has been an eventful year for the engine. The last time I went down to Leaky Finders I thought there is no way it’s going to make its first booked train in April but it did thanks to a huge effort by the working members and the staff at Leaky’s who spent a lot of time back at Stewart’s Lane on the final assembly. Looking at it today there is no evidence that the cab and tender were not repainted such was the skill of their painter in matching the colour.

Not that good, I’m not in it! Seriously I agree very professionally presented, I didn’t realise that the Watercress Line had its own film unit

At the risk of going off topic: was setting up the film unit a response to Covid, or was it in the plan anyway and the date just a coincidence?
