Bahamas will face North for the first trip, then turn south at lunch.

4930 currently faces North. Not sure when that will get turned but it is planned to st some stage.

    13268 faces North.

My understanding is 45596 is rostered for the maroons , however I think teak 7960 will be at the Kidderminster end of the set

I wonder what condition they are in? Chris Moxon on his Railcar entry suggests that of the driving cars requires gear box repairs.

Some rather saddening news to relay here but it sounds like the correct decision to prosecute given the circumstances. The is the press release issued by the ORR today

Severn Valley Railway fined £40,000 after painter suffers serious injuries in fall from height
    13 September 2024
Severn Valley Railway has been fined £40,000 after pleading guilty to offences under the Work at Height Regulations 2005, which followed an investigation and prosecution by industry regulator, Office of Rail and Road (ORR).

The incident involving the full-time locomotive and carriage painter, happened on 22 February 2021 at Severn Valley Railway’s Bridgnorth Locomotive Works where a repaint of a Mark 1 carriage was being undertaken.

At the time of the incident, the carriage painter was carrying out the work alone and not wearing a safety harness, when they fell from approximately 13 feet, hitting a metal storage cabinet before landing on a concrete floor. They suffered six broken bones in their lower back and also suffered neck injuries.

ORR’s investigation found that Severn Valley Railway had failed to put in place recognised standards of protection when working at height, while safe systems of work and appropriate instruction, planning and supervision were not present when the repainting was carried out.

District Judge Strongman said the defendant “fell woefully below the standards expected”.

Richard Hines, HM Chief Inspector of Railways, said:

“This is yet another avoidable working at height incident at a heritage railway which resulted in very serious injuries. My thoughts are with the individual concerned.

“Our inspectors have recently met with heritage operators across the sector to reinforce expectations of them around the proportionate safety arrangements that must be followed in order to carry out such maintenance tasks, because, sadly, these types of incidents remain too common. Poor standards are unacceptable and will not be tolerated."

My view is that the press release has been carefully worded, which is no criticism as the SVR has a long tradition of their own members knocking their DMU's, so they are right to be positive. This week I have already read online the childish comments about refusing to visit the SVR when the 101 is running, which mirrors the same anti-DMU rhetoric that the 108 DMU received when it was being restored. I for one am delighted this rare 3-car 101 has found a new home on a decent railway.

Returning to the condition of the set, it had been mechanically sound for many years at it's previous home and other than the required gearbox repair (which could be easily achieved with a spare box and a pit) and a good exam to reverse the effects of being stood for a while, my understanding is that it is pretty much usable. There are a lot of poorly DMU's out there and this one is certainly a long way from the bottom of the pile.

Just my own opinion, but the challenge with this unit will be the bodies. Many 101 owners have had their heads in the sand with regards to roof and lower window corrosion which is now quite seriously taking a hold. The SVR DMU group have only ever owned aluminium bodied 108's, so they will need to strap in and get the welder out to make a success of this 101 set. At least two of the three cars really ought to get some gutter and window bottom repairs, and a full repaint (minimum) before it can be considered a long term strong prospect for SVR use.

Now all of this is possible of course, and I'm certainly rooting for the owning group for this to be a success. I have always enjoyed the 108 DMU fleet on the SVR, especially as they maintain one of only three 108 centre cars preserved. They now also own one of only three 101 centre cars, so the prospect of a 6 coach 101/108 set traversing the Valley with multiple rare vehicles in operation is a heart warming future prospect for any DMU man!

    Chris.

From first look on Wednesday when it arrived. The majority of the bodywork is OK. There is a lot of work needed around the windows as the rubber has perished and the steel skin has begun to fail. The toilet end of the centre car needs a crash pillar repair behind the toilet area and most of the doors across all 3 cars need welding works to the skin but that opens up the thought of what condition are the wooden frames in for the doors.

"Minor cosmentic work" is PR speak. All 3 cars needs a repaint, the door locks will need overhaul to meet our standards and a full exam by us in C&W is needed before it goes into traffic.

That is not something that should be discussed on here.
The circumstances are known to the people that need to know and everyone who works at height within the organisation has been re-trained and refreshed. Our WaH policy has been drilled home and new, updated WaH equipment has been implemented to minimise the risk of another accident happening.

I beg to differ. People learn by mistakes, whether they are theirs or others. It does no one any good to keep the incident under wraps. What exactly was the person doing at the time and how was he doing it are two important questions which can also lead on to why was he doing it this way.?

Ultimately it is down to the railway and how much and by what route critical points are shared .

from my experience as an SVR volunteer many key safety training around working from height , line working and others are instilled through Hops and department heads . It’s as good as my paid employment

whilst legally the onus on compliance sits with the company, all volunteers on every railway should make sure that they are trained and behave safely and responsibly and that those around them do so too .
