It is stated on the Bulleid Pacific thread that 34023 is the only other flat top to retain the original arrangement.

34016 is also residing at Carnforth (as seen in this recent picture below: not my picture). The cylinders on Bodmin would probably be in better condition than those on 34073.

Way beyond my area of expertise but are the outside cylinders on rebuilts the same as originals considering the different valve gear arrangements.

PS where did the picture come from out of interest?

I believe the outer cylinders are but the inner ones were replaced as regards the valves, i think they used rocking shafts on the original engines and outside admission walcherts on the rebuilds but I'm not sure if the valve workings were the same, but something tells me they actually were

There is a pattern from when 34027 had a new cylinder made in her previous overhaul. Whether it is handed correctly and the correct type. People in higher paid positions than me will know more.

    All depends on communication.

When rebuilt, the outside cylinders were kept, but the drive to the valve was modified to come through a gland at the back of the valve chest, rather than from a lever entering the side of the valve chest between the valve heads.

The inside cylinders were replaced with a new design on the rebuilt locos.

A consequence of that is that on a rebuilt loco, the outside cylinders retain - somewhat unusually for a piston valve loco - outside admission (i.e. high pressure steam outside the valve heads, and the exhaust exiting between the valve heads) whereas the inside cylinder is the opposite, more conventional, way round.

There are some good diagrams of the respective arrangements here: https://www.bulleidsociety.org/21C123/21C123_Valve_Gear.html (original) and here: https://www.bulleidsociety.org/34059/34059_Valve_Gear.html (rebuilt).

The picture is published in the latest issue of Trackside magazine but I found it using a Google image search for "6201 Princess Elizabeth boiler lift". It comes up with several pictures with a rusty 34016 shown in the background.

I don't know about the phrase "popular replacement" being used in the article. Wasn't the situation more like 34067 being the only other option available for the trips mentioned?

Popular with travelers and line-siders because at least it was a steam replacement? ;)

Of course they were superior. And although Ron Jarvis kept them in the superior category (compared with all the other clases working on BR) his version was just a teeny bit down on the originals. :) :)

Adding an air pump and controls for working air braked trains is not a five minute job.

For the benefit of those of us who are non-technical ( me), how big a job is it? Would you only contemplate doing it at a general overhaul? If a well appointed outfit like WCR made it their top priority could they turn one out for next season starting now?

I'm not an expert either, but Hosking seemed to fit one quite quickly to 61306 after his purchase.

45231 was fitted quite quickly as well, though a couple of years after purchase. I don't think it's a massive job, but obviously easier fitting new pipework and equipment when the loco is dismantled for overhaul.

I’m not a technical person either but there’s a lot of pipework, modifications to the loco to fit the pump and equalising valve to work engine’s steam brake and vacuum if a Bulleid, I don’t know but I think there would be changes to the TPWS set up. They would probably need it recertifing for the main line too.
Next season yes but from some of the comments I got the impression that some thought it was just a matter of bolting on an air pump.
