Steam Railway magazine states that 76079 is up for sale.

It's been up for sale since at least February, though was rumoured to have been bought by Peter Best over the summer.

Has 80136 effectively filled 76079s slot, making 76079 surplus?

76079 requires a lot of work and isn't financially viable to overhaul at the moment

Like a lot of other locomotives; run until it’s too expensive to repair then cast aside.

I want to believe theres a better reason to sell than financially unviable to overhaul but it was bought specifically because it could go to Whitby. Is this the worst possible advert to sell a locomotive in recent memory?

Give it a few years and at this rate I think Mr Best will own half of the NYMR home fleet ;)

Note use of the word "rumoured" - there has been no official comment regarding whether it has been sold or not.It is a bt of a stretch to say that Peter Best will own half the NYMR's home fleet - at the moment he has two steam locos and that is the same as NELPG! Even between them they don't own half the home based fleet

Don’t forget the class 31. If he does buy 76079 that would make four. Agreed not half but a substantial investment, nevertheless.

I believe the official reason is it’s not suited to hauling 7 coach trains up the hill to Goathland on a regular basis but I’m sure that anyone who’s driven it would disagree with that.

Is it another case of a locomotive which has been able to be repaired from its ex Barry state but has now been in service so long post Barry that it needs substantial repairs due to parts which were not life expired coming out of Barry now being so. From a layman looking at various overhauls/restorations it seems more and more boilers are now needing substantial firebox plate work replaced (and/or new inner boxes), with backplate/throatplate and the lower fire box sides needing replacement being par for the course now (has what was deemed unrepairable on 61264 40 years ago just become the norm now)?

Possibly something for a new thread from people who have a clue what they are talking about (so not me) have we reached a tipping point where the initial life left in the boilers of many Barry escapee's has been used up?

most railways are now extracting the last ex BR economic value out of their fleets and the NYMR with its challenging gradients even more so. Whilst railways like to have fleet security, ie they own them , the money earned via a nominal steaming fee is often spent elsewhere leaving nothing in the pot to overhaul what is now a worn out engine . that risk is preferred to sit with a private owner who really doesn't receive enough to pay for said overhaul

those ex barry engines not yet restored do potentially become an interesting proposition for restoration as there is still life in them.

Further to my post above, here's a slide from a presentation I did on power which shows how 76079 compares with other NYMR locos. With a 7 coach train there is plenty in hand and the loco is theoretically even better than a Black 5 as there is less tractive force required to move the loco. As a matter of interest, it also shows how much better a Standard Cl.4 tank is for doing the job.

76079 wasn't in the best of condition when the NYMR bought it from Ian Riley, especially with regard to the firebox and one of the cylinders, the latter being replaced some while ago. It now needs a lot of pennies spending on it. Unfortunately, the NYMR has form in running things into the ground then casting aside when major expenditure becomes due.

I had thought it had had a replacement cylinder.
I do find it odd given that investment they are now drawing a line

But a lot of those seem to be requiring similarly extensive boiler work, looking at the posts on the HSS Facebook page of the works they are having to do on the boilers of 7200 and the 42xx from the KESR neither of which have been restored previously they are needing similar extensive firebox plate work replacements, is that due to how long they have been stored post Barry and associated decay?

Don't NELPG have 4 - J27, Q6, K1 and J72? Or are some of those now under different ownership?

The J72 is generally out on hire elsewhere, and the K1 has been spending most of the last couple of decades up at Fort William. Whether that'll change after the latest overhaul remains to be seen.
