But (being pedantic here), that doesn't mean they aren't NELPG locos. That just means that generally speaking they are not part of the locomotive pool on the NYMR :)

The days of "paraffin overhauls " have long gone. You are quite correct in your assertion about parts being life expired. Added to this is the huge increase in material and labour costs and the increasing regulation of the sector. The future doesn't look too rosy.

Or, some of the locos which went to Barry were well and truly worn out, hence they are bringing up the tail of the repair / overhaul queue.

From a slide presentation at the recent AGM, it would appear that the NYMR core fleet going forward will be 29, 825, 926, 2392, 3672, 5428, 34101, 44806, 63395, 75029, 80135, 80136, & 92134, all of which have a place in the grand scheme. 76079 is shown as 'withdrawn' and not in the overhaul programme. Interestingly, there appears to be no plan to overhaul No.5, either.
I have my doubts about a couple of those but it is personal opinion, only.

No mention of the Austerity that they were given?

Which raises the question, if Peter Best were to buy 76079, would it suddenly become part of the NYMR fleet again provided they didn't have to fund its overhaul?

If I were a betting man, I might just bet a Mars Bar on that happening. Shame you can't get king size ones, these days, otherwise I'd be betting that.:)

Slightly intrigued to see that Hartland is on there - I know she's been under overhaul for some time (and to be fair I'm basically out of the loop with how it's progressing these days) but it's almost like she's been trapped in overhaul purgatory for a while now, haha

Don't ask me to recall the amount of times I've seen someone say 'she'll be ready next year'

It's on the list of locos (as are Lucie and WB 2702) but no mention of an overhaul in the programme, which goes up to 2035. I wonder what's happening with the boiler, which is at Heritage Rail Traction?
I did suggest the possibility of oil firing when it was acquired.

Now the spreadsheet say 2029 but that's something I wouldn't even bet a poppet on.

All work was stopped on the boiler. It is now in storage.

Wasn't Hartland one of the Bulleids that was in the batch to get new fireboxes? I seem to recall there were 6; Sir Archie got the first and Blackmore Vale the sixth, with four others in between? I thought Hartland was one of them?

Well spotted. It's not on the spreadsheet presented but I'm guessing that, as it starts in 2022 and 2253 is a new arrival, it's not totally up to date. Having said that some things have been updated since then, such as premature withdrawals of 76079, 825 & 63395.

It was. The chassis was more or less finished years ago but the boiler has been a stop-go project.

whilst it’s true that some of the ex Barry locos not yet steamed are requiring lots of boiler work , possibly a combination of being in poor condition at withdrawal or the many years sat in the open air susequently (esp those with inside frame fireboxes), some are still reasonable. I’m part of the team restoring 76077 (funny considering the thread title- and 77 and 79 have history right back to 1957 at 8G sutton oak). The copper side of the 77s box is in pretty good shape and generally the boiler isn’t too bad. We’re going to replace the tube plate and front parallel barrel section but a lot of this is now fairly routine work. We’re aiming to raise £150000 and so far we have approximately half of this with more pledges to come in the near future. crazy to think is that if we hit our 2027 goal, 77 might be the only std 4 in steam as 84 is under overhaul, 17 has 18 months or so and as has been stated here 79 needs a lot of money spent on it (I heard new firebox?). Current work on 77 is on cladding and crinolines and completion of the cab. Sorry, very slight thread drift.

Sorry to hear this loco has fallen on poorer times. I had a couple of memorable runs up the Cambrian coast behind this loco where it fully warranted it's 'Pocket Rocket' nickname. Anyone who thinks this line is a quiet backwater is seriously wrong - some severe gradients and lots of quick sprints between stations where rapid acceleration up to around 50mph was needed - 76079 was the perfect tool and a very strong climber too.
Hope someone with some deep pockets is interested & perhaps fit with ETRMS too for a Cambrian Réunion?! We can but dream...I am glad I did those runs when I did.

How much pressure does Whitby put on the steam department in proactive and reactive senses? I'm seeing 4 locomotives here which can be used on that section (but I don't know how many are currently passed for that) but keeping them feels like it adds a lot of work to keep them available for that work.

Whitby-Grosmont, whilst quite winding (hence the reluctance to send Pacifics to Whitby), is reasonably flat, so the real issue is additional mileage, plus approved locos/stock & crews who are passed out for the line.

Going back to 76079, I was one of the junior members at Steamport when she arrived there from Barry - I spent a lot of time in the tender tank removing rust... Had a lovely run on an evening diner behind her, back in 2009. The climb from Grosmont to Goathland was smooth, steady and noisy! Wonderful stuff.
