I've searched this forum and cannot find any conversation about enamel signs. Are there any UK manufacturers that produce one off's?

Yes, there is one on the IOW.
I am away from home, so don't have the details.
I got the name via an internet search.

Search for A J Wells, Newport.

Such handmade items do have a price, don't be surprised.

There must be others, think of the reproduction totems.

They have a very wide range.
I wonder if they outsource the enamel work?
I have been to an enamel works. There's quite a lot of metal bashing, and baking in hot ovens. There's no mention of anything like that on the site.

I think that's a likely guess. I'd also be very cautious about ordering anything from trackside, particularly custom, these days. He used to be excellent, but in the last couple of years there have been a number of reports of orders taking an inordinate amount of time to be filled. Not heard anything either way recently, so those issues may now have been resolved, I don't know.

http://www.railwaytotems.co.uk/ are another supplier if you need a custom sign. If it is a real station sign, still worth searching the auction sites (GW Railwayana, GNR Auctions) - I recently managed to acquire a genuine Northfield totem after a 30 year search (yes, my surname was also a station name), and it only cost slightly more than a repro!

I'm investigating the replacement of Corfe Castle signal box sign. The original is still in use and starting to get tired It should be preserved inside out of the weather. Hence why my enquiry.

A J Wells could certainly do that.
IIRC my 6x1ft sign cost £1200 with VAT.
You could club together to raise that.

Make sure the rims are well protected, that is where the enamel is the thinnest.

Trackside do not use the original typefaces, they are just rough approximations that look like the originals that they probably got from looking at old photographs. According to their website they do not make enamel signs either, everything they do is vinyl cut outs.

The font is a problem. We are happy with the result, in full enamel, from A J Wells, but after an aborted proof from them (using standard fonts) we supplied a design made by Alex, from our C&W department. That worked a treat !

That's interesting, because following your link to their website allows you to reach this page:

    http://www.tracksideltd.co.uk/node/11

    Which states,
    ...and:
It's perfectly possible their website contradicts itself, but having fairly easily found the bit where they claim to supply vitreous enamel signs and don't use stick on lettering, I can't immediately find the reference you have where they then contradict that and say they don't make vitreous enamel signs?
