Judging by everyone's photos/videos Eastleigh 100 has been an enormously popular event and well worth the considerable effort of organisation. Hope a lot of money will be raised for the three charities.
Shame the M7 has such a short run with the Brake Van.
Apparently 34070 Manston arrived with a suspiciously very warm bogie bearing so will not be returning with the Swanage convoy tomorrow. It will be lifted so that the bogie can be removed and relevant bearing sorted out at Swanage before re-assembly and haulage back from Eastleigh (with our BSK) at a date to be arranged. Therefore tomorrow's trip working will be Eddystone, M7 and Queen Mary bogie brake van but, before anyone poses the question, I do not have the timings and they're not on uksteam.info yet - but I'm sure they'll appear soon.
The return 'load' for the WCRC diesel [37 ?] will be the 20 and 26 that arrived with the Diesel Gala consist but the owners didn't want them at Eastleigh apparently.
Grateful thanks to Bruce Knights for letting Manston stay behind for essential works.

Will post a fuller response when I am slightly less knackered, but just a quick message to say thank you to all involved with the organisation and preparation of 'Eastleigh 100'. The only word I can think of at the moment is 'fantastic', and the memory of pootling around the works, and shunting with the M7 last night will live with me for a long time.

I may post more by about Thursday when I've come down from this high...

I've just got home after being there since firing Manston to Eastleigh on friday, and I can quite possibly say it was one of the best railway events I've ever been to, and quite possibly one of the best weekends of my life. Spent the weekend looking after the Bulleids and a time manning the 71A group area. I'm back off to Eastleigh at 8 tomorrow to start work on Manston and thoroughly looking forward to it.

A big thanks to Knights Rail, Marcus Betts and all the others involved for doing such a great job of organising the event.

When did a Bulleid last receive works attention at Eastleigh?

This was a cracking event and it was good to see so many people there. But while we're on the subject of taking photographs, what a shame it was to see people being shouted at, waved at or otherwise made to feel unwelcome by some ignorant photographers just because they were 'in shot'.

At events like that, it's always nearly-impossible to get clear views of the exhibits, and the more you want to get into one frame, the harder it is. One just has to accept that there will always be someone about to walk into shot! Being rude to people never helps, though a polite request can sometimes work wonders.

Having said that, I got some very pleasing views of the whole site, and some good close-ups, from the fire-escape leading to the exhibition office. There was a steady stream of cadets, stewards, exhibitors and others going up and down, and no sign saying "authorised persons only", so I just walked up and got a few pictures. I kept looking up there during the day, but never saw anyone else try it. It was rather into the sun...

    Other comments on the day:
    - Marvellous to see so many Southern locos together. Thanks to all who made it possible.
    - Great selection of stalls in the workshops
    - Well stocked bar, and lots of room to socialise
    - On Monday, it was busy but not crowded, with no queue when I arrived nor when I left- just what you'd want.
    - The stewards on the bridge and at the entrance were a little disorganised, and one or two were rather rude towards the end of the day. Trying to be charitable, they had been up there in the baking sun all day, sustaining themselves with copious amounts of Coca Cola, so maybe they would be a little "hyper" after that!
    - Walking away from the works, back towards the station, I passed several signs directing pedestrians to the exhibition pointing the way I was going, i.e. away from the works, towards the station. What was the point of that? Was there a better way in than over Campbell Rd bridge? At first I thought they'd been tampered with by the local "yoof", but at least one was very firmly attached to a square post, and couldn't have just been turned around. It would have to be cut down and carefully re-errected, so not casual vandalism.

    I'll second that

I could not believe the language being used by photographers at the event, it was disgraceful. If they had wanted clear shots then perhaps the early entrance fee would have been the way for them. To shout at families to get out of the way of "their" shot was out of order, they had paid just as much to get in and enjoy the chance to get up close and climb on real engines. All in all I think that the photographers painted themselves in a very bad light, for me their behaviour was the only bad ting about the event.

Most photographers were appalling, so much so I got fed up with it by the end of my visit and took to standing in their shot taking a photo of the photographer as payback for being so rude! Its a public event and so they ought to understand the world does not stop for their camera.

I was involved with one of the locos; a couple of times people asked me very to move aside, which I did, and they thanked me politely. Maybe people were cursing me in the distance but I didn't hear any swearing, and I thought the atmosphere was very friendly.

I must agree whole heartedly with the comments about how rude photographers were. They are often obnoxious at the best of times and what they dont realise is that they barely represent any of the steam heritage business' customers, but they think they can lourd it over all the people who pay.

Being 16, I have often found that a lot of grumpy OLD men are telling everyone to get out of the way. This has got to stop and if these photographers even want these engines to be here in 20 years time, they had better buck up their ideas, because they are certainly putting young people off heritage railways, young people who are the future of these railways.

So what if there are people in your photos? there are 6 billion people in the world, as people often add to the ambience of a photo. If anything, it is the photographers who are a pain because they stop you enjoying something and expect you to get out of the way of a photo and then get in your way!

These may seem like sharp words, however it is the truth and it is these old men that give heritage railways a bad reputation and are putting young people, like myself, off them. Remember this next time you tell someone to get out of your photo!

just move away and come back later!
