The late start changed my plans today. Too late for a sunrise silhouette at Welwyn Viaduct and sun too far round for my next choice at Abbots Ripton so I headed to Glinton.

A nice speedy departure. I guess if you are running late then that's a time when the dual power available comes in useful.

Indeed - in this instance it would've been a blessing having the 57 at the rear. As most of us will appreciate, Bulleid's aren't the most adhesive-happy locos on pulling away.

Apologies. I am in Gainsborough. Let's say first Bulleid to do the full Joint line (or at least what's left of it)

The slipping propensity of rebuilt Bulleids is myth.

I knew someone would bite, I was expecting someone else though!.

I'm not so sure, there is an awful lot of published anecdotes, stories, photographs, video and audio of them doing precisely that, back in the day!.
I Love Bulleids, especially the Rebuilds, but I certainly would not call their propensity to slip a myth.

I agree. However I don’t think it’s just limited to Bullieds. Most locos with longer steam circuits are more prone to slipping, but Bullieds do seem to have the upper edge of doing it more consistently

Indeed and the diesel shoveage resulted in almost no time recovered.

just look at any of the numerous cine films taken at Waterloo pre 1967 virtually every departure there was a lot of slipping, even light engine movements resulted in slipping!

I agree if you were referring to the originals, one of their many faults was the ability to throw oil everywhere with leaking seals around the axle and fractured joints in the oil bath along with a temperamental reverser.Any locomotive will tend to sit down at the back as it starts away, with a trailing truck that will transfer adhesion away from the driving wheels so it’s necessary to be a bit careful when starting off. I can remember a few Duchesses at Euston acting as rail grinding machines in getting away, possibly because the driver of the banker was a bit slow in opening up. I’ve been on Langho Station and listened to an unassisted 35018 coming up Wilpshire bank as sure footed as any other loco and more recently the other MN taking over 600 tons of Pullmans and a Class 67 from walking pace at Tonbridge up Hildenborough Bank with no problem at all.

Have a look at the state of the track, note the dropped joint on the near side rails in this picture, I’ve seen a Standard 5 having trouble getting away from there.

A bit of a mixed bag with yesterdays chase of 34046 but certainly pleased with the outcomes and a pleasure to witness a Bulleid Pacific on the ECML in very satisfying weather too!

Just so. They don't throw oil everywhere and of course, the steam chest pressure gauge that not all locos have is a help in managing start up.
