Having got back from Wales late last night, I put some of the pictures I took whilst there on my Fotopic site this morning :

    http://ronfisher.fotopic.net/c1099919.html

No captions as yet; these will be added later. But I expect that most people on this Forum will know what they are looking at!

They are in the 'Stop Press!' collection for new pictures at the moment. I shall transfer them to the Welsh Highland collection ( http://ronfisher2.fotopic.net/c1386259.html ) in due course.

Having just returned to North Wales, following a trip to Derby for a family wedding [poor timing Nephew!!]...

I’ve also opened my ‘F&WHR - May 2009’ gallery, which covers a range of subjects - including standard gauge steam at Blaenau Ffestiniog; ‘Britomart’ and ‘Blanche’ double-heading a Wedding Charter; detailed shots of ‘K1’s new livery; WHR Sponsors and Volunteer trains; Activity at Boston Lodge; a photographic journey from Beddgelert to Hafod y Llyn and return - plus the ‘Opening to Hafod y Llyn’ activities. These can be found HERE

Take a look - if you’re interested, of course..!

What`s the story with what looks like an armed Police office in the background while Messrs Prideaux and Roberts were making their speaches?

Somebody who was there told me that the plod were there "to keep the peace" and thus prevent any argy-bargy. Or to protect Elfyn Llwyd, the MP.

They dont look like they're armed to me, and MPs rarely get armed security, only cabinet and VIP usually!

Some impressive collections there. I've forwarded the links to friends of mine who were on one of the trains on Thursday as he and his wife will enjoy looking at them. I've uploaded my photos now to http://railphotos.demeseo.com/c1701054.html

I thought the pair who were on the platform at Beddgelert were PCSOs rather than PCs, let alone armed...

Pic 539 and 541 in the link in Ron Fishers post above definetly don`t look like PCSO`s to me unless Gwynedd has been recruiting their PCSO`s from the Sweeney or the SAS. Just looked a little like the cop in the 2nd pic is resting his hand on something :-k Like I said "looks like"...

Oh yea I see, looks more like he is resting his hands in an infeminate manner on his CS spray or something...doesn't look like a gun stock but I might be wrong! Like I said usually only VIP and cabinet get armed protection, although I did see two armed coppers going into Yates' in Portsmouth the other day...handing out leaflets...in a very nice unmarked grey BMW! Weren't service police or MoD, just armed...thought it was a bit over the top, but then again it is Portsmouth

As i am a PCSO with West Midlands Police (evenin all!) I may be able to clear up a few things....
North Wales Police (sorry don't know the Welsh for them) standard uniform is poloshirts, combat trousers and baseball caps, very much like the armed police officers of practically every other police force in the UK. The way to tell a PCSO from a Police Officer is the eppaulettes are blue for a PCSO and Black for a Police Officer, also PCSO's do not carry battons or CS spray.
So the officer in the background is not armed, but as I think I can see a CS spray, it will be a Police Officer.

So how do you tell them from a chav? Oh I know - different weapons :) .

Perhaps we need an Ian Allan guide to police officers and other authority figures. Real police officers being the equivalent of locos, PCSO's and other private semi-police forces being MU's, and traffic wardens etc. being hauled stock.

In the preserved section steam enthusiasts would obviously be for preserving the traditional helmet and bike, while presumably diesel folk would want the modernisation plan chequered hat and morris minor panda car and would be demanding more gala days to ride in them. Plus of course leaving the carb untuned for maximum clag.

Organisations for investigating the above would obviously come under departmental's...

    I'll get me coat.

But it would be illegal to photograph them for said Ian Allan guide.

Of course it is illegal coz it is a well known fact that rail enthusiasts are terrorists :smt043

Oh and the chav's in my neighborhood are all wearing tracksuits so they must be getting ready for 2012 :smt043

    Moving On...

I travelled over the full line on this mornings 10am departure before heading to Porthmadog for a round with Merv. Very impressive railway and its great to see the NGG16s working hard. All the trains I saw on both railways were well patronised.

I've just uploaded some photos, taken over the past couple of days, showing trains running through the Aberglaslyn Pass...

They can be found in my 'F&WHR - May 2009' collection - though, if you've already seen the earlier instalments, you can go straight to the latest photos HERE...

Please take a look - but only if you're interested, of course!

Well done Roger - that first shot must have involved some SERIOUS climbing/scrambling. We walked into the Aberglaslyn on the fishermans path earlier in the week; the weather wasn't as good that day, and I didn't get to climb up Moel Ddu on the other side of the pass - oh well.....thats one for next time.

I did do the shot from alongside the tunnel mouth shown in your second shot and getting up there with a full backpack of DSLR and lenses was steep enough !!

Hi to ODC and Mid Hants - we had a mini forum meeting on Friday, as we had all chosen to be at the second reverse curve just above Beddgelert for the first steam working of the day - nice to chat to someone who fires the locos and hearing all the details of how its done on this challenging line.

I'll post links to some of the photos and videos I took when I get round to downloading them off the cameras.

Thoroughly enjoyable week. I'm sure we will be back again.
