I should correct my earlier post. They have two, Thomas and the Dane. The Pole is privately owned and has run in ages and 34081 has left for pastures new.

Well, that's a good solution with the developed world having made the biggest contribution to carbon dioxide in the atmosphere! When will you get the message that the human race is heading towards disaster? Even Corbyn has got the message:

Quite common with the coal that's coming through now, it burns very hot and seems to fuse with the firebars. I was recently chipping away at some clinker and got down to the shiny metal of molten firebar.

Clinker stops the air flow keeping the bars cool. It doesn’t protect the bars from the heat radiating down, though. Whose coal are you using?

I suspect that @Steve was referring to Corbyn and not climate scientists talking twaddle.

Aneurin Bevan: "This island is made mainly of coal and surrounded by fish. Only an organizing genius could produce a shortage of coal and fish at the same time." I hadn't realised that we had any geniuses in Whitehall / Westminster. My mistake, obviously. :Banghead:

Not sure where it originates, we get what the coal merchant can supply. The current stuff just burns very quickly and very hot

Twaddle eh? For a start, ask any railway infrastructure engineer the question, such as this one:

Hey, but ignorance is bliss, eh?

If you put some ballast or limestone over the grate before making the fire you protect the bars.

Sometimes you get a tender full of this already mixed in with the coal:eek: - just hope that it didn't cost more than the unadulterated coal you were expecting.

I thought that helped reduce clinker build up rather than controlling heat from the fire?

It stops clinker adhering to the bars, and thus helps maintain airflow round them.

We call it "beaching the bars" or "beach", I think probably because in the south, a common source of suitable rock was to use beach shingle (which was also formerly used as ballast).

The ballast maintains the airflow through the bars so the bars don’t over heat. Secondly the clinkers have something to adhere to rather than the bars. Not quite sure if the limestone has a chemical action like a flux also helping to avoid clinkers.
