    I'm in the small yellow panel camp - lifts the mass of green, but avoids the over-emphasis of the bulge of the nose that full yellow panels gave.

    But if I'm going to argue for a more or less perfect livery, it was the green with small yellow panels of the BRCW Type 3s.

    Ta for that - I've learned something today. I remember having a training course on an industrial estate near Rose Grove station thirty-odd years ago and seeing many empty barrels of Genklene dumped on the site...

    Final preparations were made this morning in readiness for the long awaited engine starts. Coolant was pumped through, oil primed by hand and fuel primed.
    03066 coupled up and after shunting 55009 over the inspection pit D9015 was parked outside in the glorious sunshine. A far cry from the miserable weather last September when the power units were installed.
    After a final rollover to make sure everything was as it should be the #1 engine start button was pressed by long standing volunteer Geoff Brain (who had been present when 15 was last shut down in April 1997) and PU538 roared into life as though it had been run yesterday. This unit was last operation in 2019 when it suffered a generator failure while in 55009.
    After a minute the unit was shut down for a check round and topping up the oil. Once satisfied it was started again and run for about 20 minutes during which time the engine and radiator compartments were checked for any leaks. None found.
    Next up PU417, which hadn’t run since 2003. Once again, the unit roared into life with an almost immediate clear exhaust.
    As with 538, it was shut down after a couple of minutes and a small oil leak was attended to.
    Once checked over to the engineers satisfaction it was started and run for about 15 minutes before being joined in the Napier Chorus by 538 and Tulyar stood proud in the afternoon sun idling on both engines.
    A fantastic day and the ease of which the engines started and ran after so long out of action is testament to the outstanding team effort and meticulousness of the preparation leading up to today’s engine runs.

    It's wonderful to see life has returned to Tulyar at long last.

    Just to finish off the sidetrack that I started
    I was a guest on the boat but I don't remember the chaps who owned it mentioning such a device.
    The boat that I was referring to was a Leeds & Liverpool short boat. I don't know what the engine model was.

    After the unfortunate Quill shaft failure on p/u 430

    Deltic Phasing Case From Engine 430

    We are seeking to have the Phasing Case from PU 430 overhauled prior to reuniting with the engine before fitting it into D9015 which we intend to eventually return to the Main Line after a period of Heritage line running for bedding in.
    We have taken expert guidance on this and see no point in fitting something that has not been used for over 40 years to an engine which has already had £20k spent on the generators and about £7k on various engine projects including new hoses, serviced fuel pumps and nozzles. We could be faced with an engine that runs for say 20 minutes and something in the Phasing case fails and we have to remove it at a further cost of £2.4k, which we will have already been spent on the initial installation.
    From the initial quotation we have received we are looking to raise in 4 stages, as follows:-
    Stage 1. £2,295
    Inspection report
    Recommended Scope Of Works.
    Further Quotation on parts required so as to complete Stage 2
    Stage 2. £ tbc when known
    Quotation for list of parts.
    Stage 3. £7,855
    Full Strip down, if required.
    Crack Test and Rebuild.
    Stage 4. £3,050
    Spin Test
    Transport for return, £845
    All prices plus vat

    Engine Lift imminent, electrical testing continues.

    It was 43 years ago today on January 2nd 1982, that Deltic 55015 "Tulyar" hauled the last Deltic hauled train from London Kings Cross to Edinburgh with 55022 on the return leg back to London. Deltics were no more in service after this date.
