Quantitatively no, qualitatively though I think we get a picture. Social media discussions are often pretty representative of how wider sentiment. Not always, and not in the general sphere perhaps, but this is a very specific discussion forum.

Am i the only one surprised to see the tubes being welded in.....? I thought they were expanded and peened over in the mainline boilers?

Tubes expanded and welded when fitted in a steel firebox is, I believe, quite normal practice. With a copper firebox they are expanded and usually beaded over.

When I was involved with them it was the norm to expand and weld industrial boilers in the UK. I think that they didn’t bother with the expanding bit in Europe. Intriguingly the US boilers we had had expanded and beaded tubes. I’m aware of locos with with steel boxes having welded tubes on heritage railways. Solves the problem of leaking tubes.

It's virtually impossible to get steel tubes to stay dry in medium to large steel fireboxes without either welding them in or using ferrules (these days somewhat out of fashion, although they work fine in steel tubeplates). The thermal shocks which the tube ends experience in use seem to be too great to allow then to retain their grip on the tubeplate.

Copper tubeplates don't have the same problem - I think the explanation is that somehow differential expansion makes the copper grip the tube ends harder to some extent.

Ferruled tubes used to be quite common on industrial locos in times past. The first time I ever got involved with re-tubing a loco it had ferruled tubes. However, they now seem to be frowned upon. In fact I recall reading somewhere that they shouldn’t be used but no reason given.

I think the current dislike of ferrules comes from the BR red book, and subsequent guidance based on it (eg the HRA guidance notes) which say you shouldn't use them. That's because the red book is almost exclusively intended for locos with copper fireboxes, in which ferrules are a bad idea (the additional expansion force achieved wrecks the tube holes if you fit them in copper). Unfortunately, subsequent documents have then just transposed the red book without considering that in this aspect it only really applies to copper.

I think there is also a little bit of an issue that people have been known to fit ferrules to cure leaking tubes where the ends have become paper thin. Unfortunately whilst the this treatment tends to stop the leaking in the short term, the next step is for the effected tube to crack just beyond the ferule, which doesn't sound like a good failure mode at-all! The solution for this is to know when your tubes are knackered and fit new ones, but there is always some skinflint keen to push the boat out that little bit further!

Does anyone know the results of the Q&A session a week past Saturday, in Darlington, media silence seems to have been in place since????

I suspect that no-one asked any searching questions (see @Sheff's previous posts on the matter) or if they did, maybe that's why there's radio silence...

How did people find out about the Q&A session? I don't recall seeing or receiving anything from the Trust about it.

A fellow covenantor has been in touch with me who has tried to contact the chairman multiple times with a number of questions but his calls and letters have gone unanswered over several weeks. He has posted on Facebook but the trust’s moderator keeps removing them. His questions remain unanswered and he is being treated with utter contempt. Will probably cancel his covenant.

The money is now going towards Quainton Road to fund the restoration of the GNRS's recently-acquired Diagram 245 coach.

I saw that post too. So I wonder how @garth manor found out about it and did it actually take place given there's been no other mention of it?
I have telephoned the trust myself today and the lady I spoke to was unable to give me any news regarding updates and the chairman is away at present it seems.

It has to be said that anything that he posts should be taken with a pinch of salt, was there ever going to be a Q&A session, seems a dangerous thing to do, and the lack of feedback would seem to add to the post being a load of sh1te......

As a 2857 Trustee (Slightly less calibre of engine I admit) I read these posts on here and wonder if there is any consideration for the well being of those on the other end of the argument here. I freely admit that the situation the Covenanters and supporters find themselves in is not without its issues, and indeed it’s been a useful learning experience to help us decide what to do/not to do with 2857. However ultimately the board of the A1 are human, and some of the things said here are far from respectful. I may sound “woke” to some of you, but ultimately there’s people and their feelings to consider here.

I also question how dedicated people are if they just turn their support off in a flash, and “cut the money”. The number of appeals out there means money is getting spread thinner and thinner, with a lot of groups seeing the effects of cash being spread out meaning actually non of them succeed. Personally 7 years ago I picked 2857 and have stuck with it since. Monthly standing order, and I support the decisions come what may. Because that’s what is needed currently. Fully fledged support, no questions asked.

But as I say the calibre of engine may mean I’m not seeing what others see.
