True. Some sacrifices had to be made to ensure the war was won. Still be nice to build a replica though.

Of all the current new builds, how many, though, in reality stand a chance, given how tight thing are? the standard 3 tank, has the best chance I would say, because it has the backing of a fully equiped workshop and active support base, and commercially is an ideal size engine for the SVR, A big question mark now has to be against the P2, funding and work appears to have stagnated, and such are the problems they have encountered with Tornado, it places the entire project in some question, The Patriot, again, has had set backs to deal with, and again, they need now a stustained period of no more problems being found, nothing effects funding more than having to cope with more unforeseen problems,

This is a pretty interesting prediction “theory” and on the face of how things stand in the present day you could have a point. But I think what it, and many others, seem to miss is that as one project closes the money finds its way elsewhere.

The general rule of thumb is that 25% (Give or take) of the hardened supporters keep donating to the project, but many of the remainder find a new project to fund.

82045, which I would bet on being the next New Build out of the box, would be a decent example. I suspect a good number of those followers of a BR Standard, will find their way to Hengist and as such the project will pick up, or maybe the Bluebell Class 2.

Similarly I’d expect a large number of County 4-6-0 support to find its way to the Night Owl or County 4-4-0.

Talking to the Patriot guys this weekend at the GC, that project is now coming along nicely, so many of those supporters will find a new project to fund in the coming years.

Swings and Roundabouts, and I’d be willing to bet some of those on the list steam sooner than anticipated.

Maybe because defeating Hitler was a slightly higher priority than saving an old loco?

interesting post. I would agree with these overall but would put the two 4-4-0s, County and GC into the 5-10 year slot as both seen to be making good progress. Might move the P2 down to this group too.

have we got a category for folded? Also I would put the streamlined P2 in the same category as the GE Claud

dead in the water, maybe for ones which have folded, either made very little, or no progress at all, or only really ever existed on paper/Facebook

As there is only limited 'in-service' experience, I feel that to describe the Franklin valve gear as being 'successful' must be open to question. Especially as the Pennsylvania RR rebuilt one of their T1 4-4-4-4s with piston valves and Walschaerts valve gear. Bearing in mind that the cylinders on the T1s were all part of the one-piece locomotive bed frame casting, not a conversion to be lightly undertaken!

I may have been guilty of taking the P2 website at face value!

So there were 52 T1’s, all built with Franklin A oscillating poppet gear. Apparently these suffered valve damage from running above the design speed of 100mph and poor maintenance due to a lack of training.

5550 was converted to the rotary B gear after it was involved in an accident, this gear having previously been fitted to a K class loco.

As far as the P2 is concerned though, slower speeds, improved materials and (hopefully) a high level of TLC should provide for reliable operation, assuming the detailed design is completed satisfactorily and construction follows …..

I'm not sure but I think David Elliott may have spotted some shortcomings in the design, hence the proposed P2 valve gear being christened Franklin-Elliott.

I have heard the story that a project to build a new Fowler 4-4-0 failed in the 1990’s due to low interest. Would it be possible to try again now that we’re in a renaissance of new builds?

Also, the LNWR George V group posted on FB that they have moved the loco from Crewe to Keyte Smith Ltd. this past week.

that is a class I would like to see, sadly, I can't see this completed. Progress has been on peripheral parts, the big items, wheels, cylinders, boiler, motion are a long way off

This one has come up before , and i think the general concensus was 'We are buiding one of the most numerous yet underperforming 4-4-0 s ever, with the potential for a couple of nice paint jobs' was not inspirational enough.

Think of the livery froth! Would it be old enough to get Midland Chocolate livery?
And three or four different variations on maroon.
And still paint it BR lined black...
