I think there's a problem with their website (and/or they're getting more ticket applications than Taylor Swift, which seems unlikely).

The supplier that appears to be distributing the tickets is called Mortons Events and their ticket platform appears to be operating on a ZX81.

Yes, the Railways have had only 200 years to get to this point.....
I was in a queue for over an hour before receiving a message to come back another time 8 minutes before the clock run-down....

 

Talking to someone who was also struggling with the system. They finally managed to get their order sorted but in spite of only ordering two tickets they now seem to be the proud owner of 12.

 

I'm in the 'Have PayPal receipt but no booking confirmation or ticket email' camp.

With hindsight I'm sure they'll be wishing they used one of the big providers like Eventbrite. The cost of getting short notice Cloudfare protection and queueing can't be cheap!

 

What better way than to celebrate the anniversary of the railways than an IT meltdown?

 

I miss the days when you could phone event organisers and buy tickets over the phone.

 

We should appreciate this in railway terms. Clearly the initial “time interval” system of regulating traffic caused a crash when the time between requests got too short, so now they have put in place an absolute block system …

I'm torn between a "failed freight train that was nothing to do with us wasted my day" and the operator "not having enough train-crew to man the web server". I'm confident that Rail 250 will be okay

 

The greatest cockup they use a company who sells tickets for classic car shows low demand events instead of using say Ticketmaster etc who can handle big events the website crashed now ticket sales suspended hope they find a better ticket sales agent waited 4 hours in a queue to get a sales suspended message first time got to the payment screen and it crashed some people even paid and got no confirmation email

 

They've now messaged me to say anyone who successfully completed the PayPal checkout will get their tickets, even if they didn't get a confirmation email.
However by that point I'd already resubmitted the order (and got proper confirmation this time) so have been advised to contact Mortons directly for a refund.
Feeling for their Customer Services people at the moment, someone is going to have a long weekend reconciling payments and orders!

 

They usually sell tickets for classic car shows where your not sell loads of tickets in one go they website could not handle it

 

Well that was an adventure and a half starting at 4am eastern time this morning. But, I seem to be one of the lucky ones where the site eventually worked (for my better half to finish my transaction after I had to leave for a medical appointment after 3.5 hours of trying, who needs sleep?).

I am excited for this. I may change my mind making my way from London and the Oasis concert on Saturday night to Derby on Sunday morning, but for now this is really a nice add to our summer vacation trip to England.

Hopefully folks who want to go can get it sorted out once they fix the system, because the Oasis tickets were less painful than this morning and they were chaotic too!

"£30 ticket for admission, Train fare to Derby, accomodation, + spending money.... Mingling with like minded folks is ok but ones that are unwashed and already self decomposing, I dont like. Think I will sit this one out"

 

They are now looking for a new ticket provider


Our previous ticketing provider’s site struggled to cope with unprecedented demand from around the world last week for tickets to The Greatest Gathering. We are sorry to those that persevered throughout the day in order to be disappointed when they were unable to buy their tickets to the event before we made the difficult decision to suspend ticket sales.

We are currently in the process of onboarding a new ticketing provider that is accustomed to handling the volume of web traffic anticipated for sales to our event. Rest assured, if you have already received a booking confirmation, you will receive you e-tickets in due course from the new ticketing provider. As we stressed before, there are still thousands of tickets available across the three days.

Details of when tickets will return to sale will be promoted on this website and on our social media channels. From our rail family to yours, again, thank you for your patience

 

In case anyone has missed it, the tickets went back on sale today. Took me under 5 mins to buy my e-ticket about an hour ago.............

 

Just received my ticket from the new ticket seller, though they have spelt it Murtons rather than Mortons on the ticket!!!

 

I see others confirmed today too. I was one of the few it seems who got through on the original sales last week. Got my actual ticket from the new provider today.

Now to wait for discounted rail tickets closer to the date to arrange my travel from London to Derby and back for my day.
