So apart from all of these items, all we need is rest of the loco.

Was it ever considered/calculated to omit superheating and part block the too- big flues?
For short periods of power , superheating is not really worth a lot and as You infer somewhat expensive in investment

That is a good point Tom. In the case of Hengist, if it hadn't moved the project would have ceased, instead it got an injection of engineering skills and enthusiasm which has sustained it and enabled the project to plan ahead in confidence, even to the extent of planning the inevitable move to a testing bed railway.

A small matter! If I had £1m, I'd get a 3MT built... Food for thought here... what if 1 boiler was shared between 82045, and a new build 77XXX (if built by the same group)?

It's the old cartoon of a tramp walking into a tailors holding up a button he'd found and asking if they could sew a suit onto it... mind you, I seem to recall some aircraft get built from a single propeller.

Oh, I had a look at that coach you mentioned, the GNR one. It needs some work, good luck with it

I hope that QR can work their magic on it in order to recreate a period train of GNR six-wheeled stock. Did you go to the link at https://www.gnrsociety.com/d245-restoration/ by any chance?

Now, all we need is a suitably period GNR loco to pull them - a Stirling tank of some description would be ideal!

Yes, I did. I don't know that much about the GNR really, I know they seemed to waste a lot of money on building heavily engineered lines around Halifax which never paid off, that was about the nearest they got to Manchester, although they had a big goods depot there

Betton Grange always was supposed to be long term based at a railway. It was supposed to be at Llangollen, however the chairman and his wife, who was also the ex General manager of the railway when it all went wrong, decided to leave the railway and the loco moved to Tyseley for completion.

    82045 is SVR
    Night owl is didcot
    County 460 is didcot
G5 is supposed to be based between the Wensleydale and weardale (when i last spoke to them)
F5 was always originally supposed to be at the Epping ongar.
    Standard 2 is obviously bluebell

Many of the others are "mainline" and it could be a case of deals done with people like LSL (similar to duke of Gloucester or SNG) should they still be going and mainline steam still be going by the time of completion.

Im always a dreamer and would love a collaboration between a number of groups to come together and create a base to help reduce costs and maybe share skills etc on the mainline side.

Imagine in the future a base at Ruddington for "mainline" locos. You coul have 45305, Sir Lamiel, 70013, 45551, 72010. All chip in to build a good facility and have skills that complement each other. The GC will hopefully have unified by that point and have a mainline connection, a line to run on, do testing on, and undercover facilities. Ahh im dreaming again and still haven't won the euro millions!

Nice thoughs, but too much dreaming I am afraid. The 82045 Locomotive Trust was started in its original form, before it became a Trust, in 2002. Many of the current working volunteers had arrived by 2010. That means they have worked on 82045 for 15 magnificant and productive years. Many are now in their 70s and 80s. Time waits for no man I am afraid. AND in todays world 1 million pounds is no where near enough for a New Build from scratch. Double that number and then add some.

The good news is that I am sure that the knowledgable and succesful Trust would give as much advice and help as is possible to any proposed New Build project if asked.

As Tony Massau said only recently, 82045s new boiler is ready for water!

It's going to be a great day when 82045 moves for the first time. The recent number of new build projects that have come to or are close to a conclusion have shewn what can be done, given time, lots of money, and an ongoing support base.
I hope to visit the Bluebell Giants of Steam Gala to see two new builds for the first time, and equally look forward to see 82045, and at some point 84030 running.

To what extent was Beachy Head a project to use the boiler? If it hadnt existed might it either not have happened or a different loco have been chosen?

A goods depot so big it dominates the sky line at Deansgate and can be seen in the background of some BBC Daytime programmes, no less!

I seem to recall there's an "aparthotel" off Ducie Street that was the former MS&LR bonded goods warehouse.

Thanks for this list. I realise they are not steam, but those other new builds Baby Deltic and 10002; where will they end up please?

Not really. Its at Tyseley now and IIRC was originally at Llangollen with a short interval at Leaky Finders. Although its under the GWS umbrella the connection to Didcot itself is somewhat tenuous. I don't know what the plans if any are for running when they complete it. Their stated aim of running on the mainline always looked - shall we say optimistic - to me, and I should have thought are receding further.

The night owl is owned by didcot its as simple as that. Any donation you make goes into the didcot accounts and is under a restricted donations for that specific locomotive. If the guys who are running the project resign or pass away due to old age then its still all owned by didcot.

Lms 10002 i would take a guess at ecclesbourne as thats where its based
Baby deltic no idea im afraid

I don't really know much about either project so i guess you would have to ask those projects directly for more info.

The problem with that course of action is you ruin the steam raising ability of the boiler, since the gases disproportionately go through the flues. I believe that was a problem when the surviving GNR Atlantic was steamed (without superheater) in the 1970s. Essentially you get something that can move itself and haul trains over short distances, but struggles whenever sustained steaming is required.
