Question, on a copper firebox set up is the foundation ring steel ?

That's why I said that it is not technically applicable. However, with the lack of any more appropriate standard, it is often taken as a reference by certifying bodies when considering new designs of boilers. BS931 'Loco-type multitubular boilers of riveted construction' has a similar statement where it says 'it does not apply to boilers for railway locomotives' despite its title. If you apply either standard to an old existing boiler, it probably won't comply with the standard.

I always understood that threaded stays were caulked on the inside of the firebox and the nut was only there to protect the exposed end of the stay from burning away.
If nothing else the Tornado debacle should have taught us that trying to modify an existing design to incorporate different materials and/or fabrication methods is a risky business. IMO (for what it's worth) the Hengist group would be better off sticking to the original B.R. design but with a welded barrel as has been done for 45551. The savings on the material cost of a steel v. copper 'box is minimal compared with the overall cost of the project. Anyway it's their engine - their call.

They may be caulked but with the load of a plate with pressure behind it, and the thermal loads also, i would be amazed if the nut imparted zero load in to the plate, and the stay. The nuts will be providing a level of support to the plates.

On a serious note, how much more money needs to be spent elsewhere on the chassis before spending money on a boiler.

On the actual frames not very much as near as dam it complete. But cylinders, some axles, motion, driving wheels need machining and tyres and axle boxes, bearings, springs. Trailing truck, some parts of the brake rigging, Injectors, ejector, air pump, associated piping, some of the dials and controls, smokebox furniture and chimney. a Tender
At a rough guess thats getting on for a 7 figure sum perhaps 1.5 million including the boiler ?

We use FEA analysis for design changes. The boiler will be all welded, all steel. We will allow additional water space between the legs of the firebox due to the lower heat conductivity of steel as part of the design. The foundation ring on the BR Standard Pacifics was solid and we have been advised that it should be riveted to the firebox. If anyone out there wants to help set up a boiler design team for 72010 please get in touch.

Last week we checked that the bogie frame could be fitted to the wheelsets. At the last AGM, we showed the part assembled bogie but the axlebox liners were not fitted. Last week, the liners had been fitted so the aim was to check for clearance between the liners and the axleboxes. You can view a video here - . The feeler gauges which you can see in the video came from Crewe works and were used to do this job. The clearance is a little tight and will need to be eased.

A copper firebox cannot be welded to steel (Explosive welding is not possible here)

Rivets and a solid bar was the only option then for a copper inner to steel outher connection.
BR had decided to use copper for firebox.

The BB WC boiler solution with an U shaped steel connection between members made of same material and thickness, more or less, is the way to go to avoid reenacting the Tornado over Meiningen tragedy.

Being from ( retired ) the machine tool industry, I assume you are "blueing" the bearings by raising and lowering them ?

Blueing was not involved. The point of the exercise was to ensure full and free movement. Also to check that the axleboxes did not jam in the guides. As you can see from the video the exercise was successful.

Does it fit the other way round i.e. if you swap the axles? (says he thinking about the 46207 Weedon crash)

Many thanks for clarifying that... I thought it rather strange,, particularly bearing the clearances quoted..
