SNCF removed the syphons from many 141Rs and found that fuel efficiency improved. They also did so with the 141Ps and found the opposite effect!

Not before TIA was fitted. Until then MN fireboxes only lasted about five years. No other BR boilers had TIA, so it's not a reasonable comparison.

The Standard 5 4-6-0s 73080-89 and 73110-19 were originally fitted with TIA water softening apparatus. This was later replaced by the standard BR method using briquettes.

It would make sense because they were all SR locomotives but I cannot find any reference for this. This,of course, doesn't mean that it didn't happen but it would be good to have a reference.

RCTS book B.R. Standard Locomotives Volume 2.
Also, in 1958, Annesley 9F 92088 was fitted with TIA as an experiment. Ref RCTS book B.R. Standard Locomotives Volume 4 and seven SL/DE drawings.

Excuse my ignorance, but could somebody clarify what the Acronym TIA stands for? I'm guessing in this context it isn't Thanks In Advance!

Whatever it is, maybe it would be better off on a thread of its own?

Why? It is all to do with Bulleids.

To me it seemed it was heading into a technical area that was starting to take it away away from Bulleids. And I just asked the question, no more than that.

Bryan - best if I stay with my BR lined black obsession- except for Bulleids of course - B ;)

Maybe if you stopped using acronyms in posts ,then us lesser mortals who have less knowledge of locomotives would understand more.

I was one of the lesser mortals about TIA until the question was asked above. I then took the time to check and answer it.

Would you have been any wiser if the OP had put Traitement Integrale Armand instead of TIA?

Fair question. Someone who had not met "TIA" probably wouldn't have met the full name either. I was one of those who did already know what TIA stands for in the context of steam locomotives (and might not have thought of Thanks In Advance in some other context). But then "the obvious is what one learnt yesterday".

We all tend to use abbreviations without stopping to think whether anyone will be bewildered. When one does meet an unfamiliar one a quick Google is often sufficient to reveal the meaning, but sometimes Google finds several possible meanings, none of which makes any sense in the particular context.

Thanks for that. I suppose briquettes were cheaper than installing TIA but the latter would have been superior as it was automatic. All that had to be done was to keep the reservoir full and ensure no air leaks.

The Mid Hants Railway have put a great short YouTube video up about Mertchant Navy’s. It’s worth listening to Bob talking about MN’s plus the opening part of the video has a Bulleid with its whistle in full cry. Gets my vote :)

Oh, and did someone mention a Bulleid in the snow?........ the camera had an absolute hissy fit due to the cold and falling snow - it didn't was to focus or release the shutter & also decided it didn't want to shoot in RAW either!!!
