Other railways seem to have mastered the combination of attracting a different clientele and maintaining the historical side for those who want that including thse in the Southern 6 informal grouping, so if she takes note I'm sure the way forward will be good.

Competition pay will mean that her salary is on a par with that of an equivalent role at a similar size of organisation.

This comment re 3 years in one role is misguided I'm afraid. There is increasing research to suggest that every 3 years is about the optimum time to change role in order to maximise your career progression and earning potential. With many employers giving only token rewards for long service there is often little incentive to stay a long time. With no more than 3 years in one role she is either incompetent and this reflects the amount of time it takes for her to get found out, or more likely she's someone who seeks to push herself and try new challenges periodically.

Since 2017, I have had 3 jobs across two different industries and have increased my wage by 250%

    Yes I agree.
I remember, as at that time being around 25 years at my employer that "we do not want experience, we want people with different ideas from elsewhere". I only ever had one boss who was honest enough to say to me if you want promotion you need to leave and go elsewhere. All the others would imply everyone was treated equally, which of course they were not. We did have a very Senior Manager who only did 4 days in a role before a move elsewhere, but I do accept that was exceptional. There was one who lasted 5 days at Virgin Atlantic before returning, but that case always seemed shrouded in some mystery.
I guess the only positions we ever had where experience was a bonus was flight crew. Think Captain Eric Moody as an example.

The shed seems quite large when viewed from track level. This was taken from the permissive path that runs behind Herston Halt. Foolishly as I had been to the recycling centre, I used the path from there, where it was like the Somme in places.
Also for anyone interested the wifi gear on the roof of coach 9015.

From a search, think it is not a wifi unit, but for the test on the left an Excell 4G /5G data box
    https://excelerate-group.com/excell-cellular-optimisation-antenna/
and on the right looks like a Oneweb satellite Kymeta u8 LEO data terminal
    https://www.groundcontrol.com/product/kymeta-u8-leo/
Both of which will feed the wifi units (which may be inside the carriage) depending which signal, satellite or 4G/5G is strongest?
Noticed on the Swanage Railway FB page after a post about the Steam Gala saying an announcement might be next week (visiting loco?)
"this gala will only have services running between Swanage and Norden. This is due to the damage to the bridge in the Norden - Worgret Junction section of the line.
Repairs should be completed in time for the annual Diesel Gala and obviously our Autumn Steam Gala."

I'm not sure that it's possible to generalise in this way - surely the point from which one starts is quite important! The higher up the tree one climbs, the harder it is to make big jumps in position/status/salary etc.?

You are of course correct in both your points and I do not for a minute wish to try and state that it’s always possible to boost your salary to the degree I did - I was starting from a low base point! I shall come back to this in a second…

The point I was making was an objection to the assertion that a person staying for less than 3 years in each of their previous roles shows a lack of ambition, when in fact in today’s job market it shows the opposite.

To go back to my own example I am now in the position you referred to, where it’s harder to achieve a significant jump in salary. In fact, there’s only really two positions within my department which would represent a natural progression from my team (of 7 people); each of those is a single-person role so as long as they are occupied we must look externally if we wish to progress. There are no performance-related salary increases on offer. A former colleague has just done exactly that - he took a job in a totally different sector as it offered him around a 20% rise; he had no wish to leave but there was just no progression in sight after, conveniently for my example, a fraction over 3 years in their current role. So I wouldn’t be so concerned by that if the roles on the new person’s CV show an appropriate course of development that has prepared them for the role they’re taking on.

Hopefully this makes sense and has come across as a justification of my view, which is how it is intended, rather than an attempt to shout you down.

Although you have actually misquoted what I meant. At my company staying in a role over 3 years showed a lack of ambition (my words). The comments I listed from another forum implied that anyone who did not stay in a job longer than 3 years somehow had some "baggage" that should be avoided.

41313 joins the home fleet for the Spring Steam Gala, taking the total to 5 engines. Keep your eyes peeled for more announcements soon.

How are the brushes moved into place and operated? I've tried to get the NYMR to do something similar previously and, despite initial interest, it got nowhere. I was actually suggesting the same arrangement as used on the TDR at Paignton but this might be a better arrangement.

I seem to remember that, years ago, the NYMR had a carriage washer ex-York, which never got installed because there were concerns about the waste water getting into Pickering Beck. How much water do these more modern units use, and how is the waste disposed of?

The building of the carriage shed would have been an ideal opportunity to install a permanent one with suitable drainage facilities. On the NYMR, that is!

Events & Experiences - Swanage Railway

New classic bus ride trip for the upcoming community weekend, however they seem to have removed Herston engine works tickets (which was originally part of the bus tour).

Any ideas if this has been axe in favour of the general bus tour

Presumably waste water is much less of a problem at Swanage than on the Yorkshire Moors.

.... but I'm surprised that the NYMR aren't interested in the potential manpower savings? Then again, maybe I'm not!
