Its good to hear that this loco is to steam again, but livery froth.... its just different coloured icing on the same tasty cake! Truth be told the complaints about secr now, imagine if they decided to go and outshop in Highland railway blue or some such like! As long as they steam does it really matter, maybe they have missed a trick but is litterally a trick that can be painted into the picture!

I personally am in favour in putting the loco in the earliest livery possible. That is why I like the Bluebell so much, they put 34023 into Southern livery.

I love the contradiction of describing it as being in Southern livery then calling it '34023'...! :-$

What a fantastic layout! However; all those 'runaways' with no crews on board must be the ultimate signalman's nightmare!

As for the 'H'...paint it what colour you like and I will still be happy to phot it and ride behind it once again. It reminds me of glorious days riding the Hawkhurst Branch when I was a teenager.

couldnt think of a way of writing down the number! should've just said Blackmoor Vale (or if you are going to be picky, Blackmore Vale, if you are a BR fan)

    21C123?

But in general, I'm with you - if an engine can show an older livery, then bring it on. There are more than enough engines that can only be in Black / Brunswick, so if you have little gems like the H or the C, why hide their light under a bushel?

I didn't think the E4s started their career in that livery, I though they were painted in the passenger engine Stroudley 'Yellow' livery (as worn by Stepney). The E4s were orignally designed as a passenger version of the goods E3 type after the E3 proved themselves rather good on passenger trains.

The surivring E1 class engine No. 110 Burgundy is an engine which is entitled to wear the Goods green livery.

Any as I say again, liveries don't really matter that much really to most people. So SR green should look quite good. Especially when lined up alongside the U.

I agree that liveries don't matter much to most people, and, as long as they're accurate, I'm happy too. But my preference is for the original livery, excepting where that is already depicted on another loco at SP. I too thought that 473 would have been originally in 'Stroudley Improved Engine Green' but Klaus Marx put me right several years ago! Wasn't 'Burgundy' rebuilt by Maunsell to be an 0-6-2T, or is that something else? Can't remember offhand.

Great to see the progress of the E4 is well in advanced now with the SR olive green paintwork starting to be applied to the loco. I must admit as much as I will alway prefere her in lined black she will definately look really good in olive green especially when paired with our 3 Maunsell carriages.

Is the E4 going to be one of the fastest ever main overhauls in the preservation era?

I guess from the speed I perceive it is being done it must be a very useful loco to the Bluebell. Presumably economical and reliable, as well as able to haul most loads?

So far as liveries. I'd always go for BR black with a 5 digit number starting with a 3! But seeing the E4 back quickly, (hopefully), in any authentic livery is going to be great.

It's quick, but I think you'd have to be going some to beat the Tanfield's astounding 60 days!

Some "E1"s were rebuilt by Maunsell into E1/R 0-6-2T's and were allocated to the West Country, where, among other things, they were used as bankers between Exeter St Davids and Exeter Central. Burgundy was not one of those so treated - it was sold out of service by the SR in 1927, remaining an 0-6-0T all its life.

    Quick update.........

E4 boiler to be filled with water this week, steam test in a couple of weeks and then back in the frames. LHS slide bars to be machines and fitted and new valves fitted. Steaming possibly before Gala in October.
Then it’s the "P" 1178 for the boiler boys and the "H".
Real sense of momentum in the works with plans, if nothing major happens with the running fleet, to sort another boiler out before full attention is turned to the S15.
With the railway having a lighter Pullman now that Eagle has been replaced with the modified BGZ and one set being of vintage carriages, class 2 loco's have become the mainstay of the fleet with only 1 class 4 or above being required each day rather than 3 in the past. Great for visitors, crews and the railways coal bill.
Brighton Atlantic House has been open all weekend. Had a look around with progress being made with the valve and cylinder fabrication and the Chimney casting has been delivered. Many other castings and fabricated parts on display. If you do get a chance have a look at SP when you are there.
Sad news is that the 01's 10 year ticket has expired. Work over the weekend has been carried out so it can be stored pending it's next overhaul which has been planned into the workshops timetable and may well be the next class 2 after the H.
Could we one day have 5 Chatham engines running at the same time? Now that would be something.

    Regards,

    Dave G.

Great news about the E4, look forward to seeing her again in steam.
I do have some videos of the 01 arriving at Sheffield Park and going on shed for the last time that I hope to have up by the end of the week and will link them here as well as the photo forum.

Thanks to 'Poser500' for the update. When I checked the website last week I didn't notice any info that 'Atlantic House' would be open for the weekend; never mind.

Looks good for her being ready for Giants then. Hopefully the line-up will be - visiting loco, Sir Archie, black Dukedog, SR green E4 and then supporting cast of 1638 and 80151. This year's Giants gala looks potentialy a superb event, but just what is the visiting loco going to be?

I asked this question a few weeks ago and got no response. Maybe there is no visiting loco this year?

Iasked last time I was at SP and was told "It's going to be a big green one with two tenders". However, last time I checked Flying Scotsman wasn't going to be ready in time and Bittern was away on a rail tour - so I think it is going to be the C class with the spare tender from Turner's siding acting as a tribute act.

    Tom, (tongue firmly in cheek...)
