Far be it from me to go against the consensus but I'd much rather see 850 restored than the Q1 if it became a straight choice

A difficult one for me, but on balance I'd rather see 33001 back in service. Although from what's been posted earlier here about the Q1 I'd still be very happy to see 30850 back.

    Here's one I took earlier.

I took this photo of 30850 on a freight turn at the 2012 spring steam gala near Ropley.

There were problems with the boiler before it arrived at MHR. None that I can recall during the time it ran beyond normal maintenance.

33001 - depends what stopped it as to difficulty in restoring. I know someone rewiring a 33 and it is not for the faint hearted. I think it’s highly likely that 850 would be the easier rebuild. The main known issue to resolve with 850 are the tender, the brake ejector and (maybe) the misaligned bogie frames (though those didn’t cause any issues in service). Other than that you have all the usual bearing surfaces and boiler stuff, but unless the survey throws out something it probably isn’t a big job compared to 30506 or 35005.

I don't think 33001 has any wiring that could be redone. At least not the one being discussed. ;)

33001 is the Q1 rather than a Class 33 Diesel (I'm not sure if the NRM has one of them?).

With Can Pac almost complete, what's planned to take it's place in the works?

I think the railway should hold fire on restoring 850, for now, and concentrate on getting 75079 finished, then possibly 73096, before anything else, because even with 35005, back, that still only leaves 506, and 41312, which is out of ticket soon, 506 can't have more than a couple of years left , so there will still be a shortage of motive power, 499, hopefully is less that 2 years away, and 53808 might be able to be fitted in somewhere soon, if the boiler don't need much work, I would have kept the schools class, and returned Lord Nelson, unless of course the boiler on Cheltenham, was only good for one ticket? and would need very expensive repairs,

possibly 53808, assuming the money keeps up with the work flow, but I would think the easiest one to do next will be the Standard 5, depending on what the boiler survey comes up with, 499 should be back on its wheels by the end of the year, so could move into the shed, with 53808, moving up the yard to take its place, 75079 should be nearing completion by them, hopefully with the boiler being steam tested, then back in the frames towards the same time, so that could be in traffic in 2026 season,

Also one of them was cut up at Vic Berry’s in 1989, making the restoration a touch harder than the norm…

Call it by its proper number, and there is no confusion with D6500.

How about 92212, I imagine that might get priority now?

Does anyone know what’s happening with the overhaul of 92212. There’s a photo of 92212 way back in March 2014 at Baigent’s Copse.

    thanks

I believe 33116 was/is part of the National Collection, I’m not sure if it still is.

506 will be out of ticket in 2029 (usual disclaimer!). 499 is very unlikely to run within 2 years. As to 850 or 925, that is down to the owners (NRM). 73096 would be great to see, but isn't now owned privately?

The std4 is in the works now, but depends on funding from the trust. The 7F and 9F are both externally funded, as is 499 of course. I would think all three have a chance of being finished before the std 4 and I think all these will probably get done before the std5 which will need a fair bit of boiler work. Don’t forget that Wadebridge and Sir Freddie are also due back when done. Enough probably to be getting on with.
