I see the Pacer <fx: spits> is out and about too today - have just seen it in the platform at Orton Mere waiting for Scotsman to pass. I assume this is the shuttle service to get passengers to Wansford from other stations (e.g. PNVR, XOM) to board the Scotsman service?

Correct, connects with a couple of the 60103 services at Wansford.

This instance of confusion between train and locomotive is even worse that usual. AFAIK no train called "The Flying Scotsman", which passengers can board, is currently running on the Nene Valley Railway, though they can board a train hauled by (no "The") Flying Scotsman the locomotive.

I suspect the vast majority of people who have booked tickets to ride behind the loco this and the following two weekends couldn’t give a stuff about the presence or absence of the definite article. no wonder the general public see railway enthusiasts as “anoraks”.

Yes of course - but then I doubt the general public know that Nat Pres exists, let alone read it.... So it doesn't really matter what is said here, from that POV. We may as well enjoy ourselves, and if nit-picking ("verbal rivet-counting") is part of that - well - hey.....

[For example - you can always tell a Ffestiniog Railway insider by their use of the definite article in front of loco names - "The Prince" - despite that extra word disappearing from the actual locos a very long time ago. Part of the charm of our hobby - people wish to be considered to be inside the tent. Same way that you know an American is (or wishes to be) part of the establishment, when they call 'nuclear' "nucular". Listen next time and you will see.]

And if we are in a very small bubble (we always used to call ourselves the "quarter-percenters" in the 80s, as we believed that real railway enthusiasts were about that percentage of the population - probably a lot less now) then we don't really, ultimately, have to worry about it, do we. No-one will notice.

If we are going to be REALLY pedantic, I am both irritated and offended by the constant redundant apostrophes - and more-than-odd comma presentation (word, space, comma, word??) - on this and other fora, but I know it's of zero importance to the big picture, so there's no point in pursuing it (and in the case of the former, it's a lost cause, its cause is lost). Fair comment, but I was also taking exception to the implication that (if you do ignore the definite article) the punters are boarding the locomotive rather than its train.

See also: the increasing prevalence of "train station".

However... I just took a quick look at Railcam as I type this and Wansford looks very busy for the last train of the day :)

All FS passenger and dining services are sold out. You can still buy a place on the photo charter though ;)

Away from the Flying Scotsman excitement, a recent photo shows the good progress being made on the Wansford Road Station building at Peterborough.

This is a joint venture between the NVR and Railworld and a large chunk of the cost of moving the building has come from National Highways as it was due to be demolished by the A47 dualling.

This doesn't include internal fit out however, so that is being separately fundraised for including exploring grant funding.

Good to hear that at least one of the premier line’s big green pacific machines can actually turn up to the party on time AND fulfill the advertised programme much to the punters delight! ;)

You can always board the locomotive and then travel through the corridor tender to the carriages. Saying you're boarding the locomotive would then strictly speaking be correct even though you may not be riding within it...

I think when FS spent some days in the yard at Sheffield Park for (ticketed) cab visits, the flow for punters was to board a carriage and, when their time came, go through the corridor tender to the cab, then exit via the cab door and some steps.

Doing it that way meant access to the cab was controlled (by a steward at the carriage / tender gangway); it gave punters the unique opportunity to walk through the tender corridor; and for those waiting, they could do so in comfort.

Obviously that was as a static / light steam attraction though, not as a means to board a service train!

It appears that the NVR is doing the same, but in reverse - from https://nvr.org.uk/product.php/568/...he-footplate/e285db56df6a66dbeef76c16d9041b21
