History in the making, is far more interesting than which driver wasn't suspended for doing 100 blah blah blah mph in 1966.

lol - Now who's going off topic?

I don't see any mention of speeds in this thread.

If you feel that topics you don't personally find of interest should be excluded from this forum, then I suggest you contact the moderators with your representations. I'm sure they'll give it due consideration. And if they decide to make an announcement then we'll all know where we stand.

In the meantime, just lump it.

Dear Moderators. Please can you move the 2009 Bulleid repair news to the Loco Information section.
Then the history book quotation department can carry on discussing the mid sixties ad nauseum

Pending my access to posting this topical news in the Loco Information section, here is a link to photographs from Manston's lift last Wednesday:-

Would this have been the run I read about in RW some years later? The crew were asked to explain the somewhat excessive speed achieved and the driver replied along the lines that as the fireman had filled the box, he may as well burn it. Burn it he did by all accounts.

Correct, plus it's a common courtesy to spell a person's name correctly.

This thread was about a bulleid being repaired in ZG in 2009 and not about looking through rose tinted glasses.
I agree with twr12 that the topic should return to subject and not what may or may not have happened in the 1960's.
A historic event happening at ZG and yet you are missing the point...

It's how conversations and threads develop. Someone starts the ball rolling and then people respond and the subject widens. Nobody has missed the point that once again a Bulleid Pacific has entered Eastleigh Works for attention but this very fact gives rise to other associated threads.

I'm sorry to say that I find Manston's Lift a somewhat trivial piece of history . Fine it's at Eastleigh but 71000 and D5705 have both had lifts at Crewe , numerous engines have been to Toton for tyre turning and 60163 got stabled at bescot and i'm sure there are plenty more examples . A 100mph sprint in the 1960's far more interesting , the footplate lore , final fling , captures my imagination anyday

No one has yet posed the question as to why all four boxes ran hot on the front bogie , which is unexpected to say the least given a reasonable degree of running in at Swanage

Obviously not a Southern man Martin or you'd realise the significance of 34070 at Eastleigh. ;-)

While I am far from an expert in these things...

http://carl-watson.fotopic.net/p58656608.html Shows the front of the loco being lifted, the rear frames being supported on some blocks of wood. A Bulleid light pacific is about 90tons? The crane had a SWL of 50 tons. Is the crane not supporting the majority of the locos weight? Is this not outside the SWL?

Not stirring, just an observation. (bored at work!!! :-$ )

Well if an object is freely supported at both ends and is of uniform section then each end point is supporting half the weight, isn't it? According to the weight diagram in Roger Mannion's book, an unrebuilt Bulleid weighs 86 tons, so it's unlikely that the crane was taking much over 43 tons. In any case I am sure that crane has lifted a fair few locos in its time and the guys know what they are doing.

Certainly didn't run it in at 50mph... Gather that lubrication was fine for heritage use.

well the railway wagons i deal with weigh 12.8ton and are 2 axle wagons in our lifting plan that our AP set up when changing wheels a one end so pivoting on the other set even tho the wagon weighs almost 13 ton you are actually only lifting between 4 and 4.5 tons

with the crane lifting the front end of the loco only, with empty boiler and no weight of bogie, the weight was approx 33.5t.

And we know why the boxes got warm, but i dont feel im in a position to disclose the reasons, especially on such a public forum

Manston news will now be posted in the Loco Information section.

So dust off those history books and disturb some electrons!
