    I remember at the time thinking "Jesus, that looks **** - what WERE they thinking?"

    Not much worse than the dressed-up 20 in the James Bond film.

    As someone involved with this, the main reason is that BR wouldn’t play with the BBC and supply a locomotive and stock. The producers also wanted an urban area with street lighting and traffic as a background. They approached the Middleton Railway with the suggestion of building a timber cl31 body on some diesel locos. The BBC spent about six weeks building the loco, nuclear flasks and set. It was originally intended that there would be more scenes, hence the desire for an urban environment, but these all ended up not being used.

    Here's a working you'll never see again.

    08 209 at Farcet brickyards reduced.png

    I took this around 1979 or 1980: the 08 is on the Conington Tip trip working, an occasional thing you were lucky to see trundling along the ECML but then, there were a few more miles of four tracks towards Peterborough.

    Since that was taken,
    • The 08 has gone:
    • The wagons have gone;
    • The brickyards have gone;
    • Conington Tip has gone;
    • 60% of the tracks have gone.
    Happy days :)
