Did these false starts involve repeatedly taking bookings for tours and preserved railways and cancelling?

Applauding the locomotive in operation shouldn't cover up the questions being asked as to what the heck has happened over the last few years

Probably not. It's really the coaching stock picture which has changed. Just possibly the situation with SRPS and Riviera may have been different had the loco been ready two years ago and a programme of tours put in place. But nature abhors a vacuum.

The point I was making was really just saying, wouldnt it make more sence to tow Tornado in steam, when it moves to Carnforth, rather than risk an untried engine on an LE move then once West coast are happy with the engine, then give it an engine and coach test to Hellifield which it can do at a leisurly pace to ensure no hot boxes etc

it is rare that engines are ready when it is said they will be ready and history is littered with missed deadlines . A1 trust is not alone in varying railtour agreements albeit I accept the the combination of factors has not helped the A1 trust

I do wonder if some members of this forum would even be happy if those they hold responsible in the trust , resigned, prostrated themselves at the forums feet before throwing themselves into the deepest pit of hell

are you an expert in operation of a main line steam locomotive either as a loco owner or as part of the engineering team on a TOC ?

Why shouldn't they be held to account?
They have taken a lot of money off a lot of people, have failed to deliver, mislead repeatedly as to the readiness of Tornado. Where are the boilers?

The P2 is in stasis at best.

And these are the team that take wages and hold themselves out to be professionals.

If it doesn't get used, it won't be worn out! You can't have it both ways.

No, but what makes most sence, to tow in steam, so the engine , which has not ran yet at 75mph, on a main route, bearings can become hot, lubrication feeds might not be set up quite right, at least if anything does go wrong, it can be towed to somewhere that the engine can be looked at, before moving on, or it sits down, blocking the main line, If Carnforth had already test ran it, then yes move it LE& coach, but its an untested engine that they have not ran since overhaul, and it to me makes more sence to have insurence in the shape of an deisel attached .

Bear in mind that Martin is being proved right on this thread, and the best alternative view is "trust the a1slt" which on current track record isn't exactly glowing

As I have said if you read the posts I have no involvement in Tornado , never have and probably never will (nothing against the engine but there are others I prefer to support) . I do however volunteer with a loco owning group and i'm a director on a railway which does let me see things from both sides rather than through a singular armchair lens

I said "worn" not "worn out" for that very reason.

Any run wears the engine. The idea is to get paid enough to offset the wear. If the A1slt are desperate enough to get it running and WCRC are canny enough to drive a hard bargain, it could end up being a bad bargain.

Let's consider wheel tyres- after an inch was turned off them to bodge the wheels on, the cost of replacing them has been brought forward. If WCRC then lay the engine up as the tyres are below main line standard what does the Trust do then? It hasn't made the money to pay for repairs and Tornado is sitting Carnforth.

Back to the donors with a begging bowl...

So what is this other view?
Have you let down multiple railways at short notice?
Have you ordered 3 boilers and failed to get any of them delivered?
Do you tell your donors what's going on?
These are the problems with A1Slt

Latest news from the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust via Facebook. So good to see the loco returning to the main line. <BJ>

trust me , no loco main line or preserved earns enough from steaming fees to actually cover the overhaul cost

I'd be content if there was some acknowledgement of mistakes, rather than the Panglossian everything's right in the best of all possible worlds. That would then provide a baseline for fixing stuff

playing devils advocate , did the railways know the risk and saw the potential earnings as outweighing the potential postponement , in deference to the A1 trust they are committing to rescheduling appearances

I suspect hands tied with regard to boilers albeit that choice of suppliers is limited and the contractor is not immume to the challenges in the market which is declining availability of skilled workers

communications I would agree are challenging
