There's a large number of steam enthusiasts who like other forms of classic transport so making it a steam + vintage bus event would be a good idea IMHO.

Umm yes it does look like that, but it's not supposed to be meant like that. The salute goes with the my lords bit, I suppose it's showing respect tot he loco. A good mate of mine was posing for a pic with a load of others, and they were all dfoing the salute, and unfortunley the picture got to the Sun, whith the headline along the lines of "Nazi Trainspotters". Obviously once explained to them what was actually happening, they refused to apologise...

I don't consider myself a diesel person really, but I enjoyed working on at the gala last weekend, and I would happily drive the 37 again given the chance.

I think there is an acceptance around the place that we didn't quite get it right. I think in future there would be no frieght just more passenger sets for example. But, you have to remember that this is a predominately steam railway, and it is a long time since the last gala, and that was organised largely by someone from outside the railway. View this attempt as a toe in the water. Hopefully we will get another go next year to get it more right.

Picking up on the "lack" of locomotives etc. I find it a bit odd that the MHR is criticised for hiring in loco's, when much of the operating fleet at many other lines is hired in to great acclaim. It is true that the rate of overhauls has slowed, but don't underestimate the effect that the restoration of the A4 had. This was a MASSIVE repair- almost akin to building a new engine - and arguably should never have been taken on by the MHR. Some of the other stuff is not entirely the railways fault - such as the 5's failure. Yes it is fortunate that we were able to buy a majority share of Wadebridge, and it is also fortunate that the NRM has entrusted LN to us, but neither of those things was accidental on the part of the railway. Also if things go reasonably well we can anticipate the 9F running later this year, with the Black 5 and 1806 to follow. It is quite likely that we will have 60019, 34007, 850, 92212, 31806 and the Black5 next year, and not impossible that we will have 73096 too. Two things only constrain this - money and labour. Everyone reading this can affect either or both of those! There is a heck of a lot of work involved in repairing these locomotives, much more than even well informed people realise sometimes. Crewe works could turn out a loco in 14 days or whatever it was, but they had about 20,000 people and loads of spares to do it!! If you want to know when the Black 5 will be finished, come down and help fix it, and make your own estimate!

You are spot on there 21D. I have never worked in Ropley shed but Martin Buckell ? who is leading the Black 5 team I believe said to me the last time I saw him that there is an awful lot to do to this Loco, and the team were not going to "bodge" anything. Her also said that they were doing a 20 year overhaul rather than a 10 and to my mind that is well planned long term thinking.

Yes the MHR is having Loco crisis at the moment and to give them credit they knew it was coming, and have said so unlike some preseved Railways who have buried thier heads in the sand thinking it will all go away after a good nights sleep.

I can only repeat in my own way what 21D has already said, "Don,t press that send button until you have engaged your brain and know the full facts, and if you really want to make a difference , go to Ropley shed and volunteer. Not only will you see what problems arise in an aging Locomotives restoration , but your "hands on" approach will really make a difference"

    King Regards
    Chris

A part of the MHR you may be, but you have no right to say such things. This IS and always be a forum. If you look at the forum in the dictionary then you will notice that it is for people to voice their opinions on.

Many people in the world have unfounded opinions, however do you see Mr Brown telling Jo public not to voice their unfounded opinions? (btw, that doesnt mean i like him), no he does not, therefore you have no right to say what you do.

If you were to explain to people why things are taking so long, and pull your heads out from your backsides then people will have educated opinions. But just because the lad issued an opinion, which many who I have talked to around the heritage railway see too, dont jump at him.

Being a silent member on these forums for a while now, I have noticed that you are all behaving like little kids in a playground and jump down each others throats at every opportunity. Just grow up and behave like adults.

I can appreciate how long it takes to overhaul engines having worked at Brighton and Eastleigh works during my youth, but the young people nowadays need educating about this.

What don.t I have the right to say John?, I have as much right as you do.

Here again it would appear that we have someone who, opinion is the only one that matters. I also suggeat that you also need to grow up.

    Have a nice day,

Geez - Why can't everyone just grow up and learn to get along??? CCT Man, please stop biting peoples heads off! And seems John Hoskin has a valid point about the nature of postings on here!
And as for John Hoskins postings and being a loco owner, I get the feeling he is related to Jeremy Hoskins and is going to be watching the MHR lot closely - So please engage brain before sending anything in future guys!!

    Thanks

Hopefully no Loco owner or even come to think of it follower of any railway will take anything on here as more then a pinch of salt . So John hopkins shouldnt worry to much about keeping an eye on here to ( i assume) know whats happening with his or anyone elses engines.

    Just thinking aloud.

I must say that I agree with 34007 and the comment that things on here should be taken with a pinch of salt. Plus, cct man must stop biting everyones head off. He is not in charge of this forum. But can we please get back to talking about the diesel gala?

Not having being able to attend, it would be nice to hear more about it.

And you are in charge then John?, it would appear that there is one rule for yourself and one for the rest of us.

Please correct me if I have it wrong and why please.

We are ALL entitled to our opinion.

Are you sure you are a Loco owner, which one may I ask?.

    Regards
    Chris

I dont know how it got around, but I am certinaly not a loco owner.

I am not saying that I am in charge here but you keep biting everyones head off, like 34007 said. I know that we are all entitled to our own opinions, however we can be polite when we point things out to people.

If you are the guy who does waggons up at MHR, well done. They look great.

I need to explain, I live in Jersey so I dont have a local railway. So I settle for calling myself a loco admirer. However, when setting up an account on this forum I was reading a railway magazine article about loco ownership, so I accidently wrote that instead.

I cant get down to help at MHR because I am workign heavily in Toulouse on the airbus' so all I can do as you say is 'criticise the railway'. However I do try to keep an eye on the railway.

Thank you for your explanation John, and yes I am part of the team that restores wagons at Medstead and Four Marks.

If you ever get to Hampshire look us up as there will be a mug of Tea with your name on it. I thought there was a transport Museum in Jersey that had a small circuit consisting of four ex North London Railway coaches?
