A mix of industrial and BR motive power is probably a sensible direction for the NNR to go.

Seems like a very good move. A type they already have experience with and will know will do what they want it to -and they don't have to do very much to finish it off and get it into traffic at little or no expense. A valuable addition when times are tight.

Can’t help but think in the current economic climate the return of ‘Black Prince’ to traffic may be a very long way off

I don't think so. The South Australian 520 class 4-8-4s were converted to burn both coal and oil in the late 1940s and ran like this until withdrawn in the 1960s. Here is the preserved class leader in action in 1988

I'm sure that there will be other examples around the world too.

Yes, but was that an “April fuel initiative”, Peter? ;)

At Middleton we're on tri-fuel. We light up with diesel then change over to wood firing before going over to coal. And not just on April 1st, either.:)

The NYMR can go one better. When steam is short, they manhandle on a paper copy of the Ts&Cs for passenger refunds of gift-aided donations and get an instant boost of a million BTUs…
