There has been a few people milling around Grosmont this morning on the webcam, perhaps looking for trains or refreshments / souvenirs and finding nothing, more business for the Co-op.

A post on the NYMR Ontrack site, says Pickering and Goathland are both to be closed on Thursdays and Fridays, and Grosmont is also closed on Thursdays, but open on Fridays, for drinks only.

On the front page of the website, it states that "We are next open on Friday 4 April with the Red Timetable", however the red timetable says no trains on Fridays.

Not saying you're wrong but someone must have spotted that as it is definitely saying Saturday now.
Saturday has much more planned steam haulage with just the first two trains out of Pickering due to be diesel along with the 10.40 & 12.35 between Grosmont & Whitby, a total of 48 miles. 45596 on the 09.15 ex Grosmont and 10.00 ex Whitby. A first for anyone, I believe.

Saturday is Red Timetable, at Pickering with
9.20 Whitby set steam hauled to Grosmont then diesel to Whitby
10.55 steam hauled on 3-coach set to Grosmont
With usual caveats of steam availability

Is the increase of diesel diagrams out of necessity due to current steam loco availability? Or is it a strategic/convenience decision which we can expect to be in place for the foreseeable? If the latter I hope the railway's website and timetables will be updated to accurately reflect the planned motive power.

Presumably the two day closure means steam cannot run from Pickering at the restart on Saturday unless there's a light engine move from Grosmont.

If that's correct, whoever thought this up?

I don't really follow why a loco can't finish at Pickering on the Wednesday evening, be stabled at Newbridge on Thursday and Friday and be available for the first departure from Pickering on the Saturday morning. Other railways of similar length manage to outstation locos away from their main MPD, including when there are breaks in the service (SVR with Bewdley, WSR with Bishops Lydeard).

My guess is that it saves a paid member of staff coming in on Friday evening to put a warming fire in them and a paid member of staff coming in on early Saturday am to light up. These things can’t be entrusted to volunteers, you know.
Edit: In truth there probably aren’t the volunteers to do this and crew trains at the moment.

This is near enough the reason why. It also allows us to do running maintenance to those engines that would normally be sat there for 2 days. It also allows those who come purely for diesels to get their milage behind their desired traction, not that this is a main reason, just how it has happened.
