Well they have put 76079 up for sale, so unless conditions of sale are it has to stay at Grosmont, whoever takes ownership of it can theoretically take it where they want!

Shows you how little I know!

Would imagine 76079 would generate a lot of interest from potential buyers

I seem to recall reading somewhere that she requires quite substantial repairs - either firebox or possibly a replacement cylinder?

The assessment of many on the NYMR thread is that it has been run into the ground and requires a significant amount of money throwing at it (even for the current standard of overhaul costs) to get it serviceable again

It does require some substantial repairs, probably a complete new firebox but it had a replacement cylinder not too long after arriving on the NYMR. Having said that, these repairs are becoming more and more frequent on well used locomotives and are arguably becoming the norm for the future, not at every overhaul but perhaps once every thirty years.

Faced with a potentially large bill for overhauling 76079, the railway has put up a strong but very flawed case for getting rid of it. What is laughable is that, having said it isn't much use to them, they are hopeful of a benefactor coming forward to overhaul it and keep it on the railway.

I think what they mean is "it isn't of much use if we have to pay for the overhaul" :)

In a fantasy world I suppose the NNR could make very good use of ‘79, and the NYMR could make good use of Black Prince, if you forget about costs of overhauls of both machines, the complexity of selling/swapping locomotives, politics and everything else that is involved with heritage steam locomotives

I think its true that 76079 needs substantial firebox repairs. In short, the ex-BR life left in it has now been exhausted in the both its previous ownership and the NYMR's, but that's effectively normal wear and tear -- as the 76077 group at the GWSR are finding out, repairs on engines that have never yet run in preservation can be expensive to rebuild, so it should come as no surprise |that one that has probably done 200,000 miles working hard is probably worn out. I don't think it needs a new cylinder, though - it did, but a new one was made and fitted. I would be sorry to see 76079 leave the NYMR - it is very similar to the Class 3 moguls that did work on the line in BR days and so fills an important gap when there are so few examples of types that did run there available. Needs must, though, and another loco capable of being oil fired might be seen as more useful in the longer term, and that would favour the WD as a choice, but those locos were cheaply built for a very short expected life, so the rather better built 9F might be more attractive!

The WD still has several years on its boiler ticket. Black Prince is in need of an overhaul.

BP was a big attraction for the line, more so than the WD it seems. But the WD maybe fits in with the M&GN atmosphere, being similar to the WD 2-8-0s that ran on the joint line (like standard 4 2-6-0s have an Ivatt 4 lineage)

Anyway maybe enough crazy internet speculation, what will be will be.

A perfect chance moment yesterday of 13809 heading towards Weybourne, failing to spook a grazing deer in the field below.

76079 is stored in the carriage shed (needing a full overhaul) and was announced as for sale not that long ago. I doubt they want it to leave, but also haven't got the space/funds to overhaul it. The ideal situation for them would be for someone to buy it, restore it and keep it there, but if someone came along with an great offer I suspect they would take the money and run.

Apologies. I was answering part of a previous message but had missed that it had already been answered afterwards and had discussion about. I obviously never got to this last page! I blame the distractions of children!

I've let myself down, let my family down, and everyone on this thread. Sincere apologies..
