This was suggested by someone for the NYMR last year. A quick calc based on the average daily rainfall concluded that you would need something like a 100 wagon tanker train at 4000 gallons/tanker depending how wide a strip you sprayed. It would have certainly made the 9F work, though. :)

Does your water tower hold 400,000 gallons? And how fast does it replenish :)

Being serious, that gets to the nub of my question: it felt like you’d need ridiculously large amounts of water to make a difference.

Ah, but you'd only need to do the uphill sections, there's less chance of fires starting on downhill bits ;)

Yeah, but there’s this weird feature I’ve noticed that the bits you thought were nice and easy downhill when you were going turn out to be an uphill slog coming back :)

Presumably the answer is to always do the uphill slog bits first, so you can put the fires out whilst you're coasting back downhill…?

It's a pity the last two Martin Mars aircraft went into museums last year, they would've been quite handy.

I know seagulls are a nuisance but methinks that’s a bit of overkill.

This was the Kiwi version, at Pukeoware on the Glenbrook Vintage Railway. The basis is a White truck (of US origin) which I think dates back to the 1930s, the conversion to a jigger being in 1948.

The Talyllyn had and I presume still has fire trolley working whereby the trolley can follow a train between Pendre & Brynglas during periods of high fire risk. I think the token would be carried by the trolley. I would see that as being logical as it would mean that it could not be physically replaced in the token machine until the section was clear.

The Foxfield Railway used a water train during the drought in 2018. It can be seen here at about 5.37:

Yes, and a fire train. (The currently restored LSWR brake 3rd No. 1520 was converted to carry a Coventry Climax engine to act as a fire pump). I never understood how it was supposed to work - by time a loco has started a fire; returns half an hour later past the site and notices it, continues to its destination, then unhooks, fetches 1520 and a group of fire fighters ... it could be an hour between a fire starting and getting there with a pump.

Currently, all the tender locos carry a small portable pump on the back of the tender that can pump water from the tank, which can project a jet of water with a range of probably 15 or 20 metres. Testing the pump each day is part of the fireman's duties.

I have no update on additional conditions imposed beyond those we ran under last week. The train length was reduced by one carriage (which require moving some morning bookings to the afternoon train). This weekends loadings will not require anyone to move bookings. I expect the train to run unassisted.

The weather is set to turn before the Caernarfon trip!
