I wonder where they are getting a new boiler for £400k from?? Although it's a better piece of journalism than others we could mention. I think they mean repaired rather than replaced.

When the loco went to Carnforth there was a surmise that West Coast would be restoring it at their own expense in exchange for being able to use it on their trains. The Society's continuing appeal for funding implies that they are paying West Coast to do the work: if that is the case, the restoration will proceed as slowly as before.

With two organisations who are both notorious for playing their cards close to their chests who knows.

I wonder whether there is some sort of middle ground that WCR are funding to get her back, with a view that seeing what the difference is between steaming fees vs overhaul costs after a period of time and who is in the red makes the payment then, Its worth noting that the quoted cost is <£200k which seems bloody cheap considering suggestions previously as to the state of the boiler and the number of times it was patched up before this final failure?

There is almost certainly cash input from West Coast, the amount being asked for is nowhere near the amount required to overhaul a Pacific - recent equivalent 10 yearlys have exceeded £1 million. Remember 6201's previous overhaul at Tyseley was the bare minimum to get her working again (don't think the boiler was even lifted), so a lot more will be needed now. I suspect what is being asked for is some form of match funding.
Good to see work progressing though.

    Some progress on 6201:
After the boiler of 6201 ‘Princess Elizabeth’ was lifted at Carnforth back in the summer, it was found that the ashpan needed to be completely renewed.
Given its shape and the fact that it was completed in the run-up to the Festive Season, it has been nicknamed “Santa’s Sleigh”.

Just a thought, after all the fuss about the livery Tornado is now wearing, apparently at the insistence of WCR, I wonder what livery 6201 may be wearing after her WCR led overhaul?

It's the same thought I always have: BR Green looks good on everything, but everything being in BR Green doesn't half get tedious.

BR Green would be nice. AFAIK, both of the surviving Princesses have always been in LMS red in preservation although they had always been green in BR days.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't there a clause in the constitution of the owning group, that she has always got to be in LMS livery .

As I recall, 6201 was in LMS red, 46203 in BR red.

Sums up the arrogance of the certain members, they might have got more support (both people and financial) over the years and had a working loco with a different attitude.

Colour isn't everything, but it also is!

There have been offers over the years to paint it green temporarily for photo charters etc, and a repaint back into red, and they've always been turned down due to what the constitution says. Amending the constitution is a definite no no!

Yes it certainly was for at least a part of the period, thanks for the correction. But it never was in "real life" and neither was Lizzie. Several of the English-based members of the class were of course in their later days.

Yes, but also of significance if the fundraising will be affected by the views of potential supporters and/or operators on the colour of rust-proofing.

The 6201 website says that she was painted in lined LSWR black with the early BR symbol post-war… I've always found the LMS red a hard-to-love livery, and would rather enjoying seeing her in something other than green as well…

There are two unbreakable rules on Nat Pres:

    1) If the owner wishes to paint his engine in any livery he chooses, no matter how fictitious, that's his absolute right and no-one else has a say; and
    2) If the owner chooses a non-BR livery then everyone else has an absolute right to denigrate him and the livery and the owner has no say.

Look back at many previous threads and see for yourselves.
