I'm sure how ETCS interfaces with Tornado has been covered in previous communications - maybe it'd be worth prodding the Trust to ask them for details? I might ask them if they will do that as part of improving their comms when they do their presentation to the GNRS at the end of the month.

Maybe thats what some at NR would like, but open access is just that, and they have to play ball.
Question is how long before Tornado does a Kings X departure where the system is active?

There has been a fair amount of information about testing the various parts and squeezing them onto the loco, but I don't recall much, if anything, about how it actually works, hence my raising the question.

I concur. Reams of stuff on the difficulties of squeezing x, y and z onto the loco, but unfortunately I’ve never seen a schematic of how all work works - what is measured, what is controlled and what information is received and transmitted to the control centre etc.

Do we need to know that though? It's all being paid for by Network Rail, not covenantors, so if they choose to make it confidential that's up to them. I would argue that we, as the general public, don't really need to know the technical ins and outs.

Masses of kit and electrics in places where steam, heat and water abound. A brilliant achievement that will have to stand the test of regular operating. I truly wish them well on that.

Dunno about you @osprey, but I'd like some details on how this all will interface with the brakes in particular.

Like I said earlier: curious minds...

Indeed. I noticed that Royal Scots Grey is going to pioneer this for the Deltics: when I did my driving course back in 2019 with 55 019 I asked about ETCS and its implementation on Deltics and was told that Deltics have similar ballistics to the Class 86 electrics, which has simplified the planning for them somewhat as I believe the Class 86 has already been evaluated. IIRC the vacant space on the Deltics where the steam heat boilers used to be is where the ETCS hardware will live. Of course, that may all have changed... but the boilers are now with the Ivatt Diesel Re-creation Society.

LSL reported 50 miles of cable installed to get a working ETCS in RSG, on a walkaround the works in a YT video not long ago.

For all of the gubbins being installed being cumbersome, and taking up loads of space, was the end game, a handheld device, transportable between platforms, to do the job???
