Thanks for that. It does illustrate how complex these tours are to plan and how difficult it is to keep the on-line information up to date. As usual, what Network Rail says is possible remains the final arbiter of paths and train times. Pleased to see that, aside from the necessary suburban slow line running, Day 1 looks to be a pretty sensible schedule and a decent passenger experience, time-wise.

There’s been an update in the fire risk status.

From tomorrow (Thursday 17th April), nationwide Amber, with exception of North West region which remains Red.

Isn't the NW where there has been more rain than the rest of the country? Not suggesting NR are wrong there, just surprised about everywhere else.

I see that 1z90 and 1z92 show 'trailing load 420 tonnes'. Does this suggest that Clan Line will be running without diesel assistance (fire risk permitting)? The later stages Carnforth - Edinburgh are 715 tonnes. Or am I reading too much into this?

Unless a generator car has magically appeared on GBXVII a diesel is needed for the rolling stock.

Most steam hauled trips are timed as if a diesel will be hauling 715 tonnes or thereabouts. I understand that this is to approximate the expected performance of a steam loco on a considerably lighter load.

Doesn't Clan Line normally use a generator coach on the Belmond trips? The fact that a class 67 was added for the trip on the 10th suggests a diesel is not normally needed. The generator and support coaches would presumably go back with 35028 from Bristol on the Saturday evening. Clan Line : Golden Age Of Travel - 10th April 2025

At the beginning of the week we had yellow warnings about heavy rain and flooding, but it's been a few light showers, so not more rain than the rest of the country.

Yes but this is not a Belmond trip and the generator coach belongs to Belmond. GBXVII uses West Coast stock.

We'll see. It's presumably still all in the lap of the Rain Gods anyway, what diesel assistance is needed.

And the forecast for Shap, to take a random example has moved from ten days with rain in two weeks to four days with rain in two weeks, none of it heavy.

That's a bonus. The tour also visits Milford Haven that was never advertised originally. It's a while since steam was there. 2008 with Duke of Gloucester?

So for me that's three new destinations in one hit - i.e. Fishguard Harbour, Milford Haven and Pembroke Dock.

Won't be visiting Thurso, though. Just Wick.

Well that will be news to those who were expecting both. No timings yet so who knows?
