Today's roster indicates steam all day on the Whitby section, but only on the diner for the rest of the line. Speaking selfishly, and chance of more steam over the next couple of days?

It also shows 44806 on the 16:40 Ex Grosmont this afternoon - so in theory that should be on either the 09:20 or 10:55 Ex Pickering tomorrow.

From memory was shown as rostered for that yesterday too ,today’s roster suggests it didn’t work it .

An update on the website indicates that from tomorrow the 9.20, 14:10 and 16.15 departures from Pickering, and the 13:35 and 14:40 departures from Grosmont, will be steam along with the Whitby section. Given that there isn't a 13:35 from Grosmont, can anyone explain what this means in practice?

    1235 ex G forming 1410 ex P …All four trains should be 44806.
1440/1615 37264 I’ve been informed ..unless changed this evening .

44806 should do 0920 from Pickering and the 1330 from Grosmont tomorrow I believe with 37264 on the 1055 diagram

The internally published roster shows 44806 on the 09.20 & 14.10 ex P and 12.35 & 16.40 ex G between Pickering & Grosmont. 926 is rostered for all trains between Grosmont & Whitby. 31466 working the other New Bridge diagram and 37264 the Grosmont diagram. I understand there's a problem with 47077.

When 47077 initially arrived it was stated that it was a 2-year deal. Given that it spent much of the first year (or was it more) requiring repair work, has that been extended?

According to the owning group website the hire period is 5 years. There was also talk of Whitby running!

Well, if the 25 is out for a while, it makes sense for railway to have more than one mainline passed diesel.

If only 5032 had been finished before the main man doing the work had been offered redundancy /early retirement .
It would make more sense to prioritise the repair to the 25 than pay for another loco to have gubbins fitted ,higher fuel usage and loco hire on what’s effectively a short term lease whilst the 25 is dumped to follow 5061 in the land of rot …

Having perused this thread for many months today was my first visit to the railway for seven years. I brought my wife and two small children, so what did we find?

Firstly, my wife who bought the tickets was not offered the gift aid option. So 'just' the flat family rate of £99 was offered. I noted from the receipt that if we HAD been offered the gift aid fare and therefore had the voucher to spend then it all has to be spent in one transaction.

Secondly, that one transaction, if spent on the train, is going to struggle to take up the full value given the limited range. Also, why no soya or oat milk option to go in a coffee?

Thirdly, trains were not as full as I expected, given that on previous visits I found the morning Whitby train to be full to bursting but when passing it today there were a number of empty seats.

Fourthly, operational issues with 44806 meant the roster, which was helpfully on the website this morning (and different to the fire risk update put on the website last night), wasn't kept to. No problem for my diesel obsessed 5 year old so I won't criticise on this.

Fifthly, the timetable which once was hourly in peak times now has so many gaps in it that planning a day involving a trip in the whole line takes some real thinking, and the draw of intermediate stations is dropping.

Finally, the staff (volunteers or paid, no idea) were all terrific. We encountered some lovely and friendly fellow visitors on the trains and the relatively quiet nature of the trains meant we could spread out without fear of getting in anyone's way. The countryside remains lovely (though worryingly dry) and the stock is in relatively decent condition, though my wife made very enviously glances at the teak stock as we passed it. Timekeeping wasn't great, though part of that was down to whatever was ailing 44806.

Thanks for posting. A record of experience from the”coal face “ is very helpful and much appreciated. I’m delighted we managed to please a five year old diesel fan!
